Re: 1976 gas overheats
Make sure your cage fan is intact and the passage is free of obstructions. Dirt daubers like to make nests in between the heads cooling fins. The fan shroud from the fan to the head, if missing, plays an important role in the cooling department. Also make sure the fan isn't slipping on the crankshaft for whatever reason.

Re: 1976 gas overheats
Pull the cylinder cover off and clean out the fins. As backyard said the cooling fan and all passages are critical for cooling. My HD always seems to run a little hot especially when I run it a long distance during our over 100 degree days. I even thought I would try an extra 12 volt squirrel cage fan but I never found one to try. I am still looking for the original fans are hard to find and when you do find one they are expensive. Do what backyard says, he knows what he is doing!

Re: 1976 gas overheats
For the record, later Columbia fans follow the same bolt patterns as the earlier HD fans BUT they are about 1/2 in or so longer. Therefore, HD fans can be used on Columbias but Columbia fans can't be used on HDs as they won't fit.

Re: 1976 gas overheats
I would guess you would loose a lot of efficiency using the short fan in the later engine. If the housing isn't close to the inlet of the blade it just tends to recirculate the air.
Anyone look can you change the fan housings between early and late? |

Re: 1976 gas overheats
Nah, it's close enough. I have HD fans on both of my Columbias and they work fine. Vintagegolfcarts even lists the HD fan as a replacement for the Columbia one on its website as, apparently, no one makes fans to Columbia specs but a couple of places do make HD ones (although the new ones are very expensive).
