4 wheel Harley Cart
Hello everybody. Does anyone know what years Harley made a 4 wheel cart with a steering wheel? I am a Harley rider and would like to find and restore one of these carts. Thanks!

Re: 4 wheel Harley Cart
I don't know exactly what years. The early Columbia models are made similar to the HD models but it seems you're wanting a HD model. Craigslist is a good place to start. I'd be willing to bet there are some on there now, but probably located on the other side of the country.

Re: 4 wheel Harley Cart
I don't think they were especially popular in the 60's (real HD) or 70's (AMF) so there were never tons of them around. 80's in the Columbia time they got more common I suspect likely due to lawyers and the lawsuits on the 3 wheel ATVs. The carts were a lot less likely to flip but I'm sure people were still afraid of them.
I have never seen the pricing but I suspect one reason they were not common was the price. I have no idea what the prices were but lets say you could get a 3 wheel with a tiller for $200. A 3 wheel with a wheel was maybe $250 and a 4 wheel maybe $350 so how many people (or golf course managers) would pay almost twice as much? Then there was the utilicar which had brakes, that had to have added a lot of cost. Maybe they threw one of those in if you bought 50 carts? I have had all 3 version at the same time and have to say the 3 wheels have a much better ride. The front suspension on the 4's is terrible. The 3's have the motorcycle like shock fork that really helps the ride. The 3's also have a tighter turning radius which can be a factor for some people. So you were paying extra for a crappier ride.... My 4 wheeler is a mid to late 70's (serial number plate was missing) and its the only one I have ever seen or seen for sale in my area in the last almost 10 years I have been messing with them. 90% of what seems to be out there from the pre Columbia era seems to be 3 wheel tillers. I don't think Columbia made many 3 wheels, what they did make I suspect was just using left over parts they got when they bought the company so most of what you see from that era is the 4 wheels. |

Re: 4 wheel Harley Cart
Thanks to everybody for your help. 73eldo, it seems to be the same situation here in VA. Majority by far are 3 wheelers with a tiller. Nothing wrong with a 3 wheeler, I have a 3 wheel EZ-GO in my collection of carts now. (Everything else is Club Car) I just want one for a future project. I'll find one somewhere but it seems as though they must be a "trendy" thing to have right now, and difficult to find. Thanks again!

Re: 4 wheel Harley Cart
I love the 3 wheelers for nostalgia's sake. I now have 3 of them:
'67 Pargo (tiller) '68 Cushman (steering wheel) '85 Columbia (tiller) My bother-in-law had a '78 HD given to him a couple of months ago. I did the seals on it, new carb, battery, and rebuilt the starter / generator. Sucker fired right up and runs great. Quiet too. We probably have less than $100 into it with most of that being the battery. I somewhat prefer the tillers but only because they have a more "classic" look. The steering wheels are much easier to drive. |

Re: 4 wheel Harley Cart
It is funny that on the island here there aren't any harley 3 wheelers but I have an 82 4 wheeler and the two other harleys that show up here from time to time are earlier 4 wheelers. Don't know exactly what year they were but both had tillotson carbs on them.P.S. Both were super clean looking showroom new.

Re: 4 wheel Harley Cart
I own a 1974 4 wheel and of course with a steering wheel and a 1976 3 wheel with a steering wheel and I believe I like the 3 wheel more.
