My 75 HD3
Well about a month ago I came across a 1975 Harley Davidson D4 on Craigslist for $100.00. So my son and I got in the truck and drove 2 hours away to pick it up. Guy said it ran when parked a few years ago. We turned the flywheel and motor was free so I paid and loaded it up. Spent a couple nights reading up on it and my son and I went to work on it. Cleaned the tank. Put in new plug and new Starter Generator belt. Tried to clean the original carb but still would not draw fuel so I ordered a Chinese one of EBay for $17.50 shipped. While we waited 3 days for it to arrive we got it to fire by putting some premixed gas in a coke bottle with a hole in the cap squirting gas through the Venturi. Put on the new carb and got it to start but not run great. I added a primer bulb and new filter and lines. Ran better but still not great.
Then I read an old thread on here about RPM and the whole thing was really about properly timing the points. Made a huge difference. Still not perfect but better. Then I decided to check the gap on the new plug. I guess I must have bumped it upon the initial install because it was too close. Reset it and gained more power. I still need to replace the voltage regulator and breaker. Battery not charging. |
