Default I need some help from you Harley Guru's

I have a 81 Harley 3 wheel.. When I bought it the fuel was literally green and chuncky... I cleaned the fuel tank, replaced the lines and the filter.. then instead of fiddling with the carb bought a new one on and gave her a whirl..

She does not like to start still and when she does.. its not reliable at all.. looking at the fuel filter the cart doesent seem to pull enough fuel in as the filter looks mighty dry.. but when that filter is full she will run then croak when the reserve runs out.

When she runs she smokes like... no tomorrow.. I did a compression on her and shes right in the 90PSI range, reading other posts this would be a good compression reading making me think the rings are ok.. would this mean the muffler is in need of replacing or as some folks refer to it a muffler BBQ?

Any help out there would be awesome, I know I have separate issues here but figured id lay my grief out on the line for all.

Was your oil to fuel ratio 1.5 ounces per 1 gallon of gas?,if to rich lots of smoke. Any Idea how long your cart sat without running? Your psi at 90 is very good, is that both forward and reverse ? As for a plugged muffler , it's possible it could be your problem, critters may have made a home in it. If the fuel ends up being the problem, a fuel pump could resolve it. Torching it up has been known to help, or you can purchase a new one, Id burn it first. If you are inclined to purchase a new one check vintage golf cart parts, one of the very few places to find the needed parts of these ol carts. Sorry, not much help keep us posted.

I'm at a loss with the fuel as I put a new carb on it ( did not not have the heart to tear it down.. ) I will take a closer look at the muffler within the next week or so and touch base again.

thanks

Sounds like you are having a fuel draw issue. Check out the "sticky" at the top of the HD forum home page

You got a new Tillotson carb or one of the cheap ones? In general I have not read good things about the cheap carbs, kinda hit and miss for quality, mostly miss. The genuine carbs are stupid expensive.

You could try rigging up a temp fuel supply that is higher than the engine. This should eliminate a weak fuel pump or minor leak on the suction side.

Did you have a look at the reed valve? If that isn't in good shape it really screws up the vacuum and how well it runs.

I did cheap out and buy one of those china carbs... I do have a rebuild kit, would it be a safer bet rebuilding the original first? I'm thinking this may be a step I try before tearing it down fr the seals... I can't say how much I am appreciating the guidance and help

I rebuilt the carb on my 73 with the kit 7 plus years ago and have not had any fuel problems since. Just take you time and don't drink to much beer until you are finished

did you check the check valve in the tank? (very important) also did you put one of those big fuel filters inline? dont. i use the small motorcycle filters (if any) and they work fine the huge automotive type will vapor lock.
