Default JJb's new project

Tomorrow i am going to go look at a HD gas cart (3 wheels it looks like an early 70s). the post said it run but needs a new battery... he only wants 450 so im super excited!! any tips on what i should look for in potential problems... from the pictures it looks to be in good shape cosmetically... also does it matter what battery i get for it?

Any 12V car battery that will fit in the battery tray will work.

I would look closely at the engine for any signs of leakage which would require a complete teardown to replace seals and gaskets.

A good indicator on how much it has been used is to look at the gas pedal. Spiked golf shoes wear away the metal at the top of the pedal. One of mine had a big groove missing indicating lots of use.

Check the wheel bearings for excessive play
Lift up the floormat and check the floorboard for heavy rust
It should run as well in Reverse as it does in Forward
Do a cylinder compression check if you can

The good news is, if it runs good you're halfway home. Parts are fairly easy to come by so just about anything is fixable. They're also easy to work on and there are tons of these 3-wheel versions available.

The bad news is, they're not worth a lot and the parts can be expensive. But, they are a LOT of fun!

If you want to know exactly what it is, you can look up the serial number here:

I would also add that the drive clutch is something that can show significat wear, repalcments are scarce and expensive.

The drive clutch is kind of cone-shaped that allows the drive belt to move up and down (in and out) to change the drive ratio. The surface should be flat to allow the movement to be smooth. On mine it's a little dished in a certain area - again indicating a lot of use. That part is very difficult to find. I've been looking for a year and haven't found a good one yet.

If the engine won't start try to check for fuel flow from the gas tank to the carb. It's tough to do on that cart because they don't have float bowls but:

1. Run the motor (it will probably be just the battery turning the motor)
2. Take the plug out and see if it's wet. If it's dry after a min or so of the engine turning then the motor isn't getting fuel. Best case you need to rebuild the carb or get a new one (China ones are cheap) worst case you need crank seals which SOBs on these carts/

jonr3 is is right. Check the compression. It should be at 90+.
