Default Did I fry the starter?

1976 D
I was working on my cart with it jacked up, new voltage regulator, and fine tuning the engine and accidentally hit the the electric forward/reverse switch from forward to reverse, now the starter barely turns over.
Did I fry the starter?
If so can it be fixed or just pop for a new one?

Check the sticky "Bench Testing Harley Starter/Generator" that might diagnose it or check the Manual, http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/colum...ls-HD-Service/

I "bench" tested it still on cart with belt on it, it barely turned over...like a car with bad battery. Removed belt and tested it, it spins pretty good with no load.
Talked to alternator repair shop and they said reversing the polarity while in high rpm did some damage but won't know how much until they open it.
I hope to have time to run it in tomorrow.

Boy, those starter / gens are pretty rugged regarding current. Still, the alt shop will tell you for sure. Good news is that those were used on a ton of carts from that era and still produced. If you need to replace it it wont kill you financially.

Update main issue was damaged brushes. They also did some deburing and general cleaning and maintenance while it was open.

These starter generators are incredibly easy to repair with just a basic Multimeter for diagnosis of the armature and or the field coils, but most times it is just the brushes that are worn, the units themselves are pretty rugged and durable and most wear parts (bearings/brushes) are very cheap and easy to replace,

Update:
New brushes installed and lube job done. Will not turn over at all with wires connected on cart. 12.9 volts all the way to starter.
Disconnected all wires and hooked pos to F2, neg to A1 with jumper from F1 to A2.
With belt on starter barely turns engine over, not enough to start.
Should it spins better on the test?
As far as not spinning when all wires hooked up could it be a micro switch?

12.9 is low, Batteries fully charged usually can show 13.8, put a load test on the battery, if it holds the load then jump out the micro switch during testing, clean all the terminals on the generator and the solenoid, test the solenoid also,

During testing I disconnected all the wires so the switches do not affect it during testing. I would think 12.9 volts should turn over the engine without bogging down.
I hooked up battery charger on engine start setting and still not enough spin.
