Rattle when turning
Question: I'm new to golf carts and I just bought a 76 Harley 4 wheel golf cart to restore. When I turn the clutch it sounds like a paint can rattling. I unbolted the three nuts holding the aluminum cover on and made sure the spring keepers were in place twice. Still rattling. What is it?? And some oil came out when I took the cover off. Should I replace and how?? Thanks.

Re: Rattle when turning
My three wheel cart a 76 has a oil bath clutch, the cover has a big o ring to seal it and a rubber plug on the cover to add gear oil up to level Check these HD manuals http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/colum...uals-HD-Parts/ http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/colum...ls-HD-Service/

Re: Rattle when turning
Those clutches have three brass balls in them that travel back and forth on tracks thus forcing the cluth to open and close at speed. Sounds like one of yours may be off the track. Open that sucker up and see what's going on in there.
Those are called "wet" clutches as they are filled the oil so be prepared to catch the oil when you take the cover off. |

Re: Rattle when turning
Thank you. Everything was fine when I opened it up. Must be the sliding balls I hear. Just making sure that's normal. Filled her up with oil (now if I can get the little plug to stop leaking!) always something.

Re: Rattle when turning
Got it.
Make sure your clutches aren't coming together during turns. If the motor mounts are worn or if you just installed new ones, which tend to flex easier than then original ones, your clutches may be coming too close together and touching. A good way to check is the jack the back of your cart up and rev the engine while watching the clutches. If they move towards each other then your mounts are probably bad. |

Re: Rattle when turning
Thanks I will check here in a while. I installed new belts on it and I didn't notice a whole lot of movement last night but I will check. Thank you.

Re: Rattle when turning
Also make sure your driving flange is tight on the engine output shaft!

Re: Rattle when turning
Take the starter belt off and try to move the flange. If it moves, you have a problem!
