Starter/ Gen and engine rotation
I have the starter/gen removed from an 82 Harley cart that I bought, I can not turn the thing at all, doesn't matter how hard I try. Should the pulley turn or does it have to have power to turn?
second question, can I start the engine using a pull rope wrapped around the output shaft with the starter/gen removed, if so does the engine rotate clockwise or counterclockwise if I am standind in front of the cart looking at the engine? Its an 82 model DX4 |

Re: Starter/ Gen and engine rotation
If you have the unit off and on the bench it should turn with a slight resistance from the brushes, if it will not turn by hand there is probably a frozen bearing, that needs to be replaced, these units are not rocket science just a basic DC motor/generator, the bearings are replaceable, though you might need penetrating oil to loosen things up if it is that corroded. Fix that starter/generator before trying to start it, might be best, though it can run in both directions as in forward and reverse drive,

Re: Starter/ Gen and engine rotation
Thank you for the info, cart was running when parked about 6 months ago. Hasn't run since. Cant turn starter over period so will look for a stuck/seized bearing in it.

Re: Starter/ Gen and engine rotation
Those are very common starters that were used on a ton of different engines. If you do some googling you can find a new one for $150 or so. I would just get a new one rather than messing with the bearings
Your rope trick, though I suppose technically possible, would be tough in that it would be hard to get enough tongue with an engine that size to get things going. Also, you would to bypass the ignition switch under the floor or the engine would turn off every time you let up on the gas causing you to have to rope it again. Those engines are designed to run in both directions, by the way. The starter will spin in either direction as determined by the key switch |
