Default steel gas tank fix, replacement ?

I have the thread on where to get a replacement plastic tank. the cart I am working on now is a 69 so it is steel. I have 3 old tanks. they all leak. they all have pin holes and are thin so welding is a no. what could I use to fix the best one or is there a replacement tank available? if not I may have to find a good lawnmower tank that may fit with rigging.

After treating the inside of the tank with a rust remover, then buy a motorcycle cream tank treatment kit which has a prep and then cream that seals the tank. If the pin hole leak area is thin and weak, built it up on the outside with a smooth layer if JB weld. Just my .02.

Depending on your skill and resources, but on steel gas tanks on other vehicles that have no replacement parts I have just cut out the perforated sections and used new sheet metal MIG welded in to replace the bad section, sometimes some panel beating skill is required to shape the section, and of course the ability to do a good seal weld,

I recall that post about the gas tanks. I somehow thought that those plastic ones would replace the metal ones or I am remembering that incorrectly? I do recall that vendor having a ton of different sizes and configurations. I am guessing that they don't have something close?

Regarding fixing what you have, unfortunately it may not be possible. I have a couple of vintage lawn mowers that I monkey with and the gas tanks are like you described. They get to the point that the metal is so frail that there is nothing more you can do for it.

This stuff works well if pin holes are the problem, not cheap!

The metal tanks do tend to want to rust, mostly from just sitting outside in a field for years. The later style with the plastic tank holds more and has the access to it without lifting the body which is nice. IF you have a newer parts cart with the plastic tank and battery box (73-79 I believe) the box will bolt directly to the spot the metal tank mounts and you could cut out and weld in the tank rack for the plastic tank. Also the electric carts rear battery rack is the same as the plastic tank's rack. I have a electric parts cart if you want me to cut the rack you can have it for the dimensions, its too rusty to use.

KBS Coatings sells a gas tank rust removal and sealer kit that does a great job. Here is a link to a kit sold by Amazon, but other sizes are available from KBS if you have a smaller or larger tank. https://smile.amazon.com/KBS-Coating...ver+and+sealer

I have now very successfully repaired two tanks using KBS kits. The resulting interior coating is a thick epoxy like lining that is nearly indestructible. Pin holes are no problem with this kit. Cover them with tape and the material seals them from the inside.

JB weld will probably work fine. I have seen it used for a lot work under a lot harder conditions than what a golf cart gets put through. Just clean the area really well to give it the best chance to seal.

JB weld will do it if it's just one pin hole. I would rough the surface around the pin hole up a bit with sand paper to give the JB Weld something to adhere better too and clean the surface with Lacquer thinner, Acetone or some other solvent that leaves no residue behind, then apply the JB Weld.
