'79 Harley looking for carb pics
I am new to the forums here. Actually new to the Golf Cart game and let me tell you, so far I love it. How fun.
Wanted to introduce myself as well as ask for some help. I usually try to do as much as I can do before I start asking for help. Name is Greg or Gerk. Live up in Lake Tahoe. Planning to use this in our small community to go to the tennis courts, swimming, pools etc... So.. I was buying some car parts when I looked over and saw a Harley cart sitting there. The guy was getting rid of everything. Long story short, I have it here in my yard. The Cart did not come with a carb as well as other stuff, but now I am working on the carb. All the pics I see, the carb is covered up and I cannot see the linkage. The manual I bought is too dark as well. Can anyone help me out with some close and detailed pics of the carb and linkage? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. |

Thank you very much. That is exactly what I have.
What I am looking for is it attached to the engine and the linkage all hooked up |

Re: '79 Harley looking for carb pics
This is what I see on mine. I am missing the air cleaner as well.
That aluminum piece attached to the intake looks wrong. In fact, so does the gasket20170816_174649_resized.jpg 20170816_175345_resized.jpg 20170816_175402_resized.jpg |

Mine has a aluminum piece that I would call a "tunnel" that attaches to the carb and air cleaner mounting and it all slides over 4 threaded rods. Sent from my Moto G (4) using Tapatalk |

Re: '79 Harley looking for carb pics
If I had to guess, I would install 2 studs in the intake and gasket on top, and then carb to it. (in pic)
Then the carb would be installed essentially on its side. Is that OK I am assuming that aluminum piece is something from something else?? 20170816_175345_resized - Copy.jpg |

Re: '79 Harley looking for carb pics
Yes, essentially that carb gets mounted on its side.
It appears that you have two manifolds (what the carb mounts to) there. One straight that has vertical bolts for mounting a carb (this is the one that you have circled in the above pic) and one bent that has horizontal bolts for mounting a carb. The one that you have circled is the original one. The original carbs for these carts were "Tillotson" brand. They are somewhat unique in that their fuel pumps are built into the carb itself by way of internal bellows. You'll note that there is no float bowl with that carb as well. That is why they can be mounted sideways. A lot of people, me included, prefer the more "typical" carbs with float bowls and external fuel pumps. The Tillotsons are fine, it's just a preference thing. That said, carbs with float bowls can't be mounted on original HD manifolds given the vertical mounting bolts as the float bowls would be sideways. Hence, that other manifold you have gives you options regarding carbs. Note that, when attaching the throttle linkage, the carb's throttle spring is wound to spring open meaning that, when no forces are acting open it the the throttle is actually wide open. So, in a lot of cases the throttle cable opens the carb when pulling it. In the case of HDs (and Columbias for that matter) the throttle cable actually has to pull the throttle closed when the accelerator isn't being depressed. |
