POSITIVE ground !!!!
Yes my 1970 HD cart has POSITIVE ground !
put a jump pack on it to start it and the light said correct polarity. + sign on the batt and red wire,,,,,,,,hooked to the frame ! ?? negative side connected to the solenoid.. put shifter in fwd and started it,,cart went forward. i have the manual and it says neg ground. So the shifter switch reverses polarity to the starter to turn it the other way and start the engine backwards. it would seem to me the reversing switch would also have to be wired backwards for this to work. looking at the wiring diag in the manual it all seems simple enuf but WTH would someone do this and what kind of problem would they try to fix this way ?? need more coffee this morning to wrap my head around this one !! :) |

Re: POSITIVE ground !!!!
Probably the cart had some work done to the generator or the contacts in the switch were replaced and wires where mistakenly swapped in its life time. A lot can happen in 30 years!

Re: POSITIVE ground !!!!
Ditto Two of the S/G wires are switched. I learned this when getting rid of the stock ignition switch and replacing it with a toggle switch.

Re: POSITIVE ground !!!!
Well,,i figured out the positive ground deal.
got a new battery and terminals. replacing terminals i noticed the RED ground wire terminal fit super tight on the battery and the black positive terminal fit loose. looking at the underside of the old terminals i could see some left over red paint on the neg term and some black on the pos term ! seller told me they stuck a battery in it to try and get it going.. they forced the wrong terminals on the battery post's !! some time the battery cables were replaced with the wrong colors causing the confusion ! LOL ! |

Re: POSITIVE ground !!!!
Glad (I think) I found this thread!
My 75 HD seems to start and run fine but I was always curious about the Positive Ground that it has. The previous owner must have reversed the polarity. I have not had a chance to play with it much but was curious why it started but would not charge properly. So I guess I may have found the reason! Here’s a pic under the covers and you can see the negative cable on the left runs right over to the solenoid. Regards - Randy |

Re: POSITIVE ground !!!!
Some old English sport cars and VWs came with positive grounds, and in order to fit radios and other accessories they had to be changed over, there is a procedure for doing it that means repolarizing the regulator, I understand it is quite simple to do and requires no parts, the procedure is still out there on the web? maybe a variation of this might work: http://p15-d24.com/topic/33478-12-vo...gative-ground/
