Default Bad seal, bad work,,and i dont like it.

Everything i have gotten into on this thing has been had at hard by hacks !!

heres the modified carb was on it !

if a crank seal leaks just mod the choke butterfly and run it full choke !!!

red and black RTV sealant on everything,,,,even covered over all the impulse passages...

not a gasket on the intake system,,,carb was bad enough i put a new one one..

now i know it leaks air.

can you get at the drive side seal by pulling the clutch and a C clip ?

i usually find the PTO side goes first.

so with choke partially on i got to drive it around the yard,,i dont like it.

dont like the 3 wheels and dont like the tiller stearing :(

if the drive side seal is easy i would fix it before selling to get a better price,,if not it will go as it is..

I don't care much for the tiller so I put a steering wheel modification on my 1976 three wheel. And My 1974 model had a wheel already. I like the three wheel better than the 4 wheel cart. Too bad you had to get a cart previously owned by an idiot but that is life.
I think the drive side seal has to be installed from the inside of the case. It has been a while so I don't remember. I still have an engine to assemble so this winter I will find out a lot I have forgotten. Don't blame the machine, the HD is a good easy to work on cart. Just have patience and all will be well.

Tnx for the encouragement :)

not blaming the machine at all, used to have HD motorcycles and always wanted a cart.

how did you manage with a wheel in the middle of the cart ?

on the drive side i see a circlip holding the seal in,,makes me think outside ??

SO filthy i cant see anything !!

The center wheel is good when you get used to it. The only thing I miss about the tiller is you can mount a headlight where the score card fits. The front bumper stops most of the front end dip. some people add skids or wheels to the outside of the bumpers but I never saw the need. Since there is evidence of P Poor mechanic I would power clean the whole machine then pull down the engine for new seals and bearings. Maybe a set of rings. My last HD I bought the suffered unethical mechanic. The crankcase had a plug out of it and he epoxied it back in and of course it ran good until I got it then the cases got hot enough to melt the epoxy requiring a rebuild. If you see the circlip you might be able to pull and replace it from the outside. It is worth a try. Also the Chinese carbs need some help I swapped the jets from my old carb to the Chinese (not sure it helped) but I left them in. With a little patience and some cash the HD cart will be a pleasure to use. We had a cow pasture golf course here for a while and my HD out performed 1 EZGO, 1 G9, and 1 G2. I could run circles around them. I am using the 4 wheeler at this time and my dislike except the driving difference is the brake is too far to the left for my use (still works good it is just a personal thing). Sorry about the long reply!

Did ya get a manual for that at least? You can find them here:

http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/columbia-parcars/

I too thought that the case had to come apart to get to the drive seal. If you find out differently can you post up about it? I have do to the seals on a restoration project I have planned for the winter.

Oh, and I am with TEW. Many of these carts have suffered years of neglect and years of band-aid repairs. I have restored two Columbias (pretty much the same cart) and one HD with another HD planned as my winter work. Pretty much I get them for free and fix them up. Once you get things humming, man are they fun.

It looks like the drive seal may come out but the other side looks like a case split.

didnt really want to do much more on a machine i really dont care for.

was excited to get a two stroke,,,would have liked to port map it and see what it had for timing numbers and do some grinding on it for fun to see what i could get it to do.

Yes i got a manual with it,helps some but pretty poor pictures.

inner sheave of drive clutch looks a pita to get off..
and no pix of that side of the case to see what it looks like :(

may be a project i just let go of :(

Seal on the clutch side you can get out but it won't be easy with the crank in the way. you have to pretty much tear the engine apart to get to the inner one. Also while in there new bearings are a plus. They are actually pretty easy to tear down.

Too bad! it would be a good project. Porting and polishing would not do much for you. If you increased the RPM the cooling fan would probably disintegrate. The best thing to do with a Harley is to restore the mechanics to A1 then play with the paint etc. You probably need a more modern machine to work on. Of course it wouldn't be a two cycle. Now I owned an EZGO (198 which was the most powerful of the 2 cycle EZGO line. If you find one of those cheap they would be a good one to play with. I think they are a little harder to work on but not that much.

A shame. If you give up then at least help a local harley owner who is in need of parts! These carts are very simple but also not really modifiable. You just have to enjoy them for what they are. My 64 will have a rear seat and will be going to the local Harley and cars and coffee shows just to be funny and confuse people! I have worked on plenty of the second gen carts and enjoy the tinkering.
