71 model d lower end rebuild?
Hello everyone!! Piston was chipped and looks like some needle bearings were crushed between piston and the head. Not sure where they came from yet, or it is the rings that broke and got smashed between head and piston. Either way I need direction on weather I do a bottom rebuild while I have motor out. My biggest worry is all the parts available if something is broken while I’m tearing apart. I am leaking oil on the backside of the lower unit. Which would be the seal. Is this something I can do myself or should I take it to a local motor shop to have the head board out. Or should I get a whole new head and piston together? My existing head is in decent shape but I guess I have to take measurements to figure out how much I’m working with . Please let me know what you guys would do thanks!!
Also if I do the lower end unit, I will have to take apart the transmission. So I’m worried about damaging that when I take apart at this point it is not leaking any fluid. |

You have a bearing on the clutch side of the engine and 2 sealed ball bearings on fan side. Also the piston has a bearing in the rod where the piston pin is. Is there slop in the piston movement? Either way you need to replace the bearings.

Ok thanks aircooled, looks like the last person just put in sealed bearings and didn’t bother with the oil seal. Which would make sense. So I got a price of 150 to rebore the top end. Not sure if that includes a piston rings. I’ll keep you updated thanks again. I’ll be taking Clutch off today

So long as there isn't much play in your crankshaft when seated and the case seals up good and tight you'll be ok.

A new top end runs about $150.00 on ebay with cylinder, piston, and rings.
