Default engine turns too tight for starter after new piston and jug

i have a older amf h/d 67-81 orderd a new piston jug combo followed instructions and got rings on corectly and got them started in the lower sleve and it went up in sleve and started getting tighter till i had to use a rubber mallet to finally get the jug seated onto the case now it seems starter doesent have enough power too crank it i can turn it by hand but gets really hard around tdc then rolls on over this cart has set a very long time when it was brout to me i made sure piston in corect setting for the exaust port and i used a fair amount of 2 cycle oil for assy of it all is it posible the starter / gen is wore out it didnt turn very fast to begin with with old piston & jug and had no compression when i got it thanks for any help i can get

i was under the impression that the new jug and piston was already matched to work together should i have honed the cylender anyway ?

I would think the jug should be honed already.
The hone process doesn't' remove any jug taper issue I would think.
I don't know these engines or kits but it's possible the jug was not bored correctly.
To me the piston should not bind in any part of travel.
I would remove the piston from the rod and install in the jug and see how it slides.
Older starters on fresh engines can struggle but it seems like there is some other issue with the kit.

If this jug is tapered and it could be then you may be ok but just have weak starter.
I think I read these jugs are tapered but I have no experience with them.

Experts here should be able to help.

These carts be tough to turn by hand. It will get harder to turn approaching TDC as, if I am not mistaken, the cylinders are tapered just a bit at the top, add that to your compression kicking in. Take the plug out and try it turning it to just to be sure. That will take compression out of the equation. If you bought the jug / piston kit then that stuff should match up.

Did you check the end gap on the rings?

I hate to say this but you may want to contact the seller and ask for a new jug kit. I have done 5 or so top ends on these carts now and have never heard of anything like that.

There really is no way to screw up getting those together. If the rings were done wrong they likely would have broken.

.007 to .017 inches for the ring end gap
That is measured with just a ring in the cylinder not on the piston.
If still unsure how to check it just ask, will be more than willing to help.
