Default 1973 Harley throttle issue

I just purchased a 1973 Harley cart and know very little about these golf carts. The first time I drove it for only a few minutes and it seemed to run fine. Today I drove it for about 2 minutes and it seemed a little sluggish. Then I stopped to switch drivers. The other driver stepped on the throttle and it started fine, but would not run above idle and would not move even with the throttle fully depressed. I checked the cable connection to the carburetor and it seemed fine. When the throttle is depressed all the way I could see the cable moving the throttle plate full open. When at idle, if I'd rapidly pump the throttle it would intermittently move forward 2-3 feet at a time. Any ideas from you experts on what is going on?

Welcome!

What's probably happening is that when your cart is "idling" it probably isn't really running at all. The starter it probably turning the motor, which will make it move, but the engine isn't actually firing.

First thing first, check the basics. See if you have spark. Check your compression (should be somewhere around 90 psi). Check to see if you are getting gas into the cylinder (the plug should be wet after you crank the motor for a few secs).

The first thought thought is a fuel delivery problem since it does move some when the pedal is pumped. Even that could be the starter only moving the cart. Still fuel, spark, and compression should be checked!
