Harley 1964 D rebuild
My 64 D is somewhat complete, but will not start. I just got it this winter, so I've been looking it over deciding on how to approach it.
Compression tests at ~79 PSI. I'm not certain, but I think that is a bit weak. I've read a lot of different opinions, but it would be nice to find an original factory compression value. Since this is a 1964 D with a standard piston, the compression ratio listed in the service manual is 6.6:1 So 14.7psi X 6.6 = 97.02 psi as an ideal pressure? |

Yep. 90+ is where you want to be. 97 is just about perfect but some carts go over 100.

Re: Harley 1964 D rebuild
IMHO you should do a top end rebuild BEFORE you snap a piston ring and tear up some other parts. The rings are very brittle and when they wear thinner have a tendency to break.

Re: Harley 1964 D rebuild
Thanks guys!
I've pulled the motor and begun the dis-assemble. When i turn over the motor by hand, there is some slop before the piston begins to move; I also hear a "clickety" noise I don't approve of. So i first removed the clutch. Expecting to find havoc, it actually looked great. Unfortunately the clickety noise isn't coming from in here... |

Re: Harley 1964 D rebuild
I've taken the motor down to the crank case. The connecting rod is making the noise on the big end. The rod has some up and down play in it when i grab it and pull up and down at the top of its throw.
The crank pin and bearing looks to be scarce as hens teeth! Although 2 or three of each sold on ebay a few days ago... Same person got them all! (and it wasn't me.) |

Re: Harley 1964 D rebuild
Yeah I would think there is some replacement that could be machined to fit the original?
Most of the time also the outer bearing behind the starter has spun in the housing. So check it. I ended up using loctite retaining compound for my bearings. |

Re: Harley 1964 D rebuild
There's a guy I've found in Ohio (Golfcartcare?) that says he has an oversized replacement bearing and pin for 67 up. I would think it would work for 64, since the rod was the same part number. I'll have to call him again and ask about that.

Re: Harley 1964 D rebuild
Wise words! I noticed as I was tearing it down that the whole bearing appeared to spin when I moved the rod. Took me a second to say to my self Taint right!
