Default It’s alive finally

Hi everyone. After a long battle finally got my 66 basket case running.

Here is what I e done so far:
Pulled head had it bored 30 over. New piston and rings, new crank bearings, n ew carb, rebuilt the stuck transmission ( earnings and seals)

Now here is my issue. Since I’ve never seen one of these carts run before I’m not sure how much they are supposed to smoke? Seems to smoke a little more than I would think it should. Does it ha e to break in? Also I’m getting a pretty substantial back fire. Not constant but pretty loud when it happends. No body or front on yet so I can’t drive it yet. Any thoughts?

I'm not totally sure. When I had it off and I shook it it did have a rattle, but it seems to quiet things down somewhat with it running. I'm just not sure how quiet these things are supposed to be?

There isn't oil in a crankcase so any smoke is coming from the fuel mix OR there is a build up of oil in the muffler which there engines have a tendency to do. Do you think the muffler is oil laden or blocked with carbonized oil ?

A lot of black carbon came out so I assume so. I think I will take the muffler off and see if it still backfires. If it doesn't backfire tha
En I know it is the muffler so I'm going to cut it apart and see If I can fix what is rattling around in there.

I tried to find a post where some one cut open one of these early mufflers but couldn't find one. Are there any?

If that is it a new muffler for the harley carts isn't super expensive. The muffler not right on any 2 stroke is not a good situation.

I cut mine apart as the baffles were all loose and rattling around, I used a zip wheel and cut a patch out, fit the baffles back in the positions that they were in before the tack welds that held them broke, used a cheap HF fluxcore unit to do it, then welded the piece back in the shell, came out nice no rattles and the HF welder cost less than a new HD muffler, so I got a welder and a good muffler out of the deal

I think I will have to do surgery. I don’t think these mufflers are available. Do you have any photos as to where the best place to cut is? ‘‘This is the large muffler only used the first 4 years.

I cut mine in the underside of it so it was not visible, it was bad so I thought i had nothing to lose, not a complicated repair aside from trying to place the parts back in their position, the outer shell should have some spot welds visible from where the baffles were attached just don't cut in that area, mine is the later muffler but a muffler is a muffler, nice looking job on the HD. love the carpet!

Thanks for the additional info. Gotta have a nice carpet. Getting to old to lay on the hard floor. Thanks again!
