Crank seal tips
Hello all.
79 Harley still not running properly. The prob is not timing. I have to use choke every time I drive it. It goes approx 12-15mph in reverse and 6mph in forward. I guess I am going to attempt to replace the crank seals unless someone can convince otherwise. I have never done this, so does anyone have any tips on the job? Do I need any special tools? Are the 2 seals the same, so I just need to buy 2 of the same ones? Any tips and help will be greatly greatly appreciated. I bought this cart to drive and have fun. So far have had it a long time and only drive it in reverse |

Re: Crank seal tips
Crazy question but how do you know it's not timing? It seems as if the crank seals were bad you wouldn't be able to go that fast in reverse?

Re: Crank seal tips
Not a crazy question.
I have been trying to get the timing perfect on it for months. Ive had a good mechanic friend time it as well. We both think the timing is spot on. I don't know what else to do other than push it off a cliff. Cant drive it off |

Re: Crank seal tips
Yeah, timing on those things can be a nightmare. I have an '85 Columbia which is pretty much the same as you cart and I swear it can't be timed by points. I converted it to electronic and it runs great.
I have never done crank seals on the HDs but it's my understanding that the case has to be split to get to one of seals. There are a host of service manuals here if you don't have one: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/columbia-parcars/ The one for 63-80 should be for you cart. |

Re: Crank seal tips
Well, I'd rather start with electronic.
Can you explain what I can do to get rid of points? What would I need to purchase? That would be great Thanks |

Re: Crank seal tips
You can go electronic but the points will still be the trigger, I put a CDI on mine but the points are retained as the triggering on my system, they operate at millivolts so they never wear out at the contacts anymore, and the plug never seems to wear also.

Re: Crank seal tips
This is the conversation process:
http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-c...formation.html Trust me, I am not a genius with this stuff. If I can do it anyone can. Essentially, the conversion provides a very long spark so timing almost becomes an after-thought. It takes some work to get there though! If want to try to stick with points (which work just fine once you get it) I have found that methods described on the manual haven't worked well. The only thing that has worked for me is to keep the points plate off and run the cart, just making tiny adjustments here at there until you get it. Remember to check the point gap too! People tend to focus on timing timing timing but if the point gap isn't right the timing will never be right. |
