Default Ignition Timing on '71 Model D ?

My '71 Model D sat for a while due to a Gas leak. Once I fixed the problem, it would not start. I figure it to be the Points and sure enough, that is what it was. Pretty different from what I am used to, when installing Points, I carefully followed the directions from the online manual on how to.

All went well and it started and ran good, but it seemed like it then needed a Timing Adjustment. I am now ready to tackle the Timing, but after studying the manual on how, it sure seems complicated. Like the Points, it is pretty different from what I am used to.

I will try to go step by step by the manual, but just wondering if anyone out there could add any info, guidance, or tips before I get to it.

Thanks

I have never had much luck with timing with the manual. I just keep the points exposed and drive the cart around, stopping here and there and making tiny adjustments until I get it right.

Same as I do. Make sure you have some sort of mark to know where you started and how much you are moving. Make a slight change. Test in forward test in reverse. If one is stronger move it slightly again. If the good one gets better and the bad one gets worse move it the other way slightly. Repeat till they balance.

Appreciate the replies.

Good advise and I will give it my best try.

I figured something went wrong when I installed the new points as it ran great before the old points went bad.

Thanks again.
