Default 1973 Harley model D cranks with the key on or off

My 1973 Harley model D cranks with the key on or off and when the shifting lever is in forward or reverse. It doesn't start, just cranks. If I move the shifter lever to the middle position it will not crank. Please feel free to call/text me (Floyd) at 636-795-9232.

Does the starter change directions when you change the lever?

The circuit is pretty simple. It basically goes from the battery-breaker/fuse-key-switch on gas pedal- then it splits one wire to the ignition coil and other wire to the solenoid. Solenoid should only engage when key is on and pedal is being pressed.

The gas pedal switch is under the floor board right at the edge near where the rear body starts. There is a disc you can see with the body flipped up that is attached to a rod to the pedal. That disc presses on the switch. When the disc is touching the switch the switch opens so no power. WHen the disc is off the switch it closes and sends power to the solenoid and coil.

Solenoid is fat cables. Fat cable from the battery positive to one side and that is where the fuse/breaker taps in. Other side fat wire goes to the F/R switch. F/R switch sets the proper combination of the 4 starter gen wire between + and ground to get the proper direction.

Solenoid stays engaged as long as the pedal is pressed and key is on. Once the engine starts it becomes a generator and has to stay on to charge the battery.

Sounds like someone has messed with the wiring on yours. Hope this short explanation helps you begin to work trough it.
