My New 78 Harley Question
What would cause engine to fill with gas?
I put new fuel line on it and at first thought that might leaking somewhere but I don't think so now, I also put 5 gallon of gas in it as it was almost empty. I don't think the tank is leaking either, but parked overnight in my trailer (twice now) it has left a huge puddle...... In the morning I try to start it and get a lot of raw gas squirting out of the exhaust pipe to muffler connection, So I pull the plug and turn it over. I get a heavy mist of fuel out the hole for 10 seconds or so. Now I believe the crankcase is filling with gas to the point it may be leaking out the seal overnight. Perhaps it's residual fuel from when it's running as it seems to me it is running way rich, probably the reason it runs so terrible..... Bad diaphragm in the carb/pump? The way the fuel line is ran I guess some could drain to the carb/pump if it was able to get through and into the crankcase?? Thanks for any ideas EDIT; Uh oh, I'm answering part of my own question lol. But it's dripping again and I finally did see where, it's off of the starter pulley. Think it must be from the crankshaft seal as the backside of the pulley is wet too, and it's a lot. I drop about every 15 seconds, Wowwy!! But the main question is still out there, Why would the diaphragm carb let it pass through? It might even be a siphon effect |

Re: My New 78 Harley Question
We had a bad diaphragm in the carb one time and it did leak around the outside of that area. But did not see the crankcase issue you are seeing. Remember the HD's must vacuum draw the fuel up out of the top of the gas tank rather than some gravity feed. Your situation has me puzzled ?

Re: My New 78 Harley Question
I have seen that on a quad that had a gravity fed fuel system but not on a cart with a vacuum pump. I don't know how it can be anything other than your carb needing rebuilt or replaced.

Re: My New 78 Harley Question
Yeah it's a weird one, Welcome to my world ..... You've all heard of Murphy's law, Well now you've heard of Dabble Inns law
I guess it's possible for the diaphragm to be squirting fuel out on the backside of the pulley and dripping down, it is hard to see in that area. But I did see wetness on the crud below the crank seal...... Although it isn't a gravity fed system there is about a foot or so of a downhill run in the fuel line that could run out, this is why I don't like to use black rubber line instead of the tinted stuff. You can't see in it....... I'll know more when I get it home and tear into it, but for now I've figured out a way to stop the leak when in my trailer for the 100 mile trip. Needle nose vice grips on the line next to the carb, I get about 25 seconds of run time lol. Long enough to drive it in and run it dry just in case it truly is filling the crankcase.... Yeah, it ain't easy being me |
