Harley gas cart throttle linkage
Newbie here. New to this forum. New to golf carts, as an owner and a tech! Heck, I have only rented an electric one twice.....
Just so that you all do not think I am nuts, I have completed rebuilt and restore automobiles. I know how to operate a wrench. But, admittedly am feeling inept on this one. I have a 74 Harley gas cart. When I brought it home it was not running. The choke and throttle cables were both broken. All 3 rings were broken and the cylinder was scored. The carb was gummed up. You have all seen this before. I have installed a .020 piston and cylinder, rebuilt the carb, replaced the choke and throttle cables. I have a "copy" of the shop manual but as you also know, the pictures are poor. Finally, here is my plea for help. I have obviously done something wrong. As I have the throttle cable installed, the gas pedal pushes (extends) the cable. Yet the throttle lever on the carb would need to be pulled. What am I missing? Does anyone have a picture of the top of the carb? Or maybe a verbal explanation of what I am missing? Thanks in advance, Lee |

I have a pix of a '79 HD (Tillotson carb). Choke cable was broken when pix was taken, but you can see how its set up. Send me your email and I'll forward it or your cell # if you phone can receive pix.

the throttle cable wprks backwards the carb is sprung wide open with no cable hooked up the cable holds it closed and releases it as you acellerate it does not push it open

Re: Harley gas cart throttle linkage
I just figured mine out yesterday on my 81, but not how I'd like; I'd rather run the governor (or at least try it anyway) so I don't blow my engine; but I have been asking all over for pix of the governor setup.... so far I'm "batting 1,000" coming up empty;
I have 2 carts that I need this same info for; and for the OP; yes the cable "pushing" when you press the gas is the way they work; the spring on the carb works opposite how youd think; youre thinking like a car or a mower; spring tension CLOSED the throttle; this one is wound opposite, to have spring tension OPEN it. so you let off the gas and the cable retracts, which CLOSES the throttle. |

Re: Harley gas cart throttle linkage
I used 2 of those cable stops like a minibike or go cart would use, one "just beyond" the throttle link on the carb and one "inside" the linkage about an inch "short" of the end of the cable....... I had originally thought that those would be too bulky and bind/get "caught" on something but it didn't.....

Re: Harley gas cart throttle linkage
i have a 66 gas cart and mine was missing all of the cables when i got it. Where do you get cables from? choke cable is universal but carb cable is different. also need brake cable. I see that the carb 'pushes' open and from a pic in manual, it shows a swivel plate behind clutch and a short cable from under air cleaner around to carb. i am missing this also.
Help would be greatly appreciated cuz i am getting close to completion. Bill |
