In the newer kits the pump diaphram and the pump gasket have been combined to one piece. you'll have one less piece in your rebuild kit than shown in the old manuals. when you replace the the welch plug dent it to keep it in place, don't try using any adhesive. don't use any on the reed plates either chances are you'll plug the vaccum hole.

Has anyone taken a look at this manual yet? I did last night.
I started rebuilding my carb last night and decided to have the manual handy for refference....I did ok for a bit then needed to consult the manual...It's not even the same style of carb. What the hell!!! Anyways...after a little looking. I came to the conclusion that there is only one way to put the carb back together. All the screws are different sizes so it's impossible to put one in the wrong hole. I just need to replace my throttle shaft and the carb will be 100% rebuilt.

interesting Duggalo, I think you are on the right track tho. I have rebuilt many 70's two cycle motorcycle carbs & agree to just pay close attention of how it comes apart and you will be fine.

The HL series Tillotson carb was used on all HD Carts from 1963 to 1980. Harley used a HL231B which has minor variations from some of the others. If you do not have a HL series carb it has been replaced with a later model carb. I think some were changed to a float bowl Walbro in 1982 which was adaptable to earlier carts. So you may have a Walbro. If it is a float bowl type it is a Walbro.
http://www.aerocorsair.com/id27.htm will give you a better look of a similar carb to the HL series plus some Walbro carbs that are too small but the Tillotson is helpful.

Tew45....

My carb is a Tilly HL231B. It's #909 infact. What I am saying...is the HL manual doesn't look anything like the 231B carb. The manual has diagrams with screws for H and L adjustments where the 231B carb only has the idle adjustment screw and the needle valve. < - - (not sure if correct term)

You need to look carefully at the HL Series information for that is your carb. That is a HL Series Read series not a HL 231B there is minor differences. That is the carb that is illustrated in the Harley manual. The 231B has a plug in place of the main adjustment screw and the Idle adjustment is a (T) handle going upward from the carb. But the manual is correct and if you look carefully at your carb you will see that in fact it is your carb and the manual does apply!
