Default 1969 Harley New Carb no gas

I have a 1969 Harley I was getting too much fuel before and the carb was in bad shape. I purchased a new carb and when it is installed I get no fuel. If I put my hand over the carb intake while the engine is rotating I fell a good suction, and if I spray a little starter fluid in the carb it will start for a short period. The reed valve looks fine. I am puzzled.

There is one adjustment on the carb and I have moved it from closed to open with the same results.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Pat

Check your gas line for air leaks.
check your reed plate to see if the vac. hole is pluged.
3/4 turn out on the carb set srew is a good place to start.
check for air leak around the carb also

I was told if the Control Lever isn't exactly flush with the bottom of the metering chamber, there will be issues with operation.

I just rebuilt my carb last night...hoping I got it right. LOL.

It's the flat piece of steel that has a hinge pin through the center. Spring underneath on one side and on the other is usually a forked side holding the inlet needle. Sometimes not forked and just flat sitting on the inlet needle.

I found this thread when I was hunting a manual. It's somewhat useful...but not the same model Tillotson. http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=64450

Also...are you gettin gas to the carb? I would check your fuel hose and strainer valve. Make sure there are no clogs. New fuel filters are only $5 if I remember right.

Yes fuel is getting to the carb, just not throuh the carb. The fuel filter is new. I have not had a chance to check the reed plate vacuum hole yet. I am uessin that is pobably the problem...I think it would not suck any gas throuh the carb if that is plugged.

OK-are you ready for this...when I take the plastic cover off the carb, and try to blow throuh it...it is sealed...this is a brand new carb...I think I can drill it out carefully...it looks like a plastic moulding issue...just to make sure, I took an old carb I have and took the plastic piec off and it is as clear as a tunnel...
