Clutch Trouble ?
Hi All,
I have a 73 Harley & have been working on it & like most of you dumping money into it for a year now. The motor seems to run smooth & no smoke and start right up every time. almost ready to do the body work. Just one problem. it runs fine on flat ground but when going up hill it is a dog. I have raise the body while the front wheel is against the side of my building & hit the gas, the clutch is working like it should but once the belt get good & tight it just stops spinning (no belt slippage) is something inside the clutch slipping or could it be that I need to start thinking about the top end of the motor?? You guys have been GREAT in the past helping me get this thing going & hoping you can help me out one more time. THANKS Last edited by roady89; 04-28-2010 at 10:47 PM.. re: Clutch Trouble ?
What stops spinning, the belt or the drive clutch?

re: Clutch Trouble ?
Neither the clutch or the belt is spinning, but the motor seems to be running at full throttle.
THANKS! |

after the belt stops, is the motor still revved up?

re: Clutch Trouble ?
I believe the old harley drive clutches had a splined center and the
the shaft was splined, you may have something stripped out. Is the inner sheave of the drive clutch spinning? |

re: Clutch Trouble ?
Yes the motor does still rev fine even after the belt and clutch stop spinning, it is just like when it needs more power the clutch gives up but the motor still revs.

re: Clutch Trouble ?
You've got to have something going on in your primary clutch. I just don't understand how it can be ok on flat ground & only do it on a hill. you sure your belt isn't slipping?

re: Clutch Trouble ?
I am positive that the belt is not slipping. When the front wheel is against a solid surface the motor revs to full RPM but the clutch does not spin, I can put it in reverse & take off as long as it is on flat ground. I am SO stuck on this one. Could it have something to do with engine compression??? Just SO wierd that there is no slipping & spinning in the clutch. I do see the clutch is coming together like it should until it gets to a cetrain point & then it just stops spinning but the motor still runs at full speed. I am SO confused

re: Clutch Trouble ?
If the motor is still revved up and running at full speed, I don't think it's compression. Bad compression would cause the motor to bog down and cut back when the clutch engages. It could be something with the clutch....maybe splines are stripped???
