Default Question about the Tillotson carb

I have a 1979 D4 that I am trying to get running.

It is not drawing fuel. Squirting fuel in the carb will make it start and you can rev the motor without issue until the gas in the carb is gone.

I know that the Tillotson carb operates off of engine vacuum in order to operate the fuel pump.

Here is my question, assuming there is a problem with the fuel pump in the carb, could I install an inline electric fuel pump in order to get the gas into the carb where it can make its way into the combustion chamber?

I know that someone is going to tell me to rebuild\clean the carb but what I want to know is, will the carb work with an external pump if the carb pump doesnt work?

Thanks guys.

I don't think adding an inline is going to work with that carb,
I've done it on the walbro carbs but they use an external pump.
have you checked the filter in the tank to make sure it is not plugged?

The gas line is clear and I have it running into a new gas can with the correct fuel/oil mix so that is ok.

The carb is a new carb so I doubt a rebuild is in order. I might have to tear it down anyways just to make sure all the ports are clear. I really, REALLY was hoping I wouldnt have to do that as I know nothing about these odd little carbs. I have a couple guides for the carb so I guess this will be my next step.

The tillotson carb is a very simple carb to rebuild. theres not alot to it.
www.denniskirk.com has pretty good deal on rebuild kits.

The Tillotson carb does not have a float bowl, therefor an external pump will not work.

The carb has an internal diaphram that a pumps the fuel. If it is damaged it won't pump. I agree with the proir post. Just buy a rebuild kit, very sipmle job and sinple solution.

make sure you have a check valve on the end of the gas line and the line primed. I installed an outboard motor priming bulb on mine when priming is a problem

jeggers,
I DON'T RECOMMEND IT

there, now for the small print.
you want to wire it in after your micro. get one that has the built in filter and remove your inline filter . drill your jet one size. bore your jug .070 dbl up on your base gasket then mill thickness of one gasket thickness off the head.
don't blame me when you blow it up racing everyone in the campground.
but you do owe me half the beer you win on the bets
have fun Craig
