Default Harley Davidson Gas Engine Restoriation for Offroad Purpose

Hello,
I am new to the fourm. I have recently purchased a Harley Davidson gas powered golf cart and I am looking for more information on it. It is currently parked the individual that I purchased it from said he parked it due to a starter problem I took a look and also belive it to be a starter problem. However once I have it operational I am looking to lift it for offroad use. I would like to do this for the longer range that the gas engine can provide. Does anyone have any advice toward parts for the offroad modification. Also how can I determine the year of it the serial number has a J2 next to it, also where can I find a manual for it.

Thanks for all the help ahead of time

"For many of the parts listed, testing procedures have been added. Click on the part to see if testing procedures are provided."

"For Troubleshooting gas carts, refer to the "Engine" category. Tuneup specs are located under the "Ignition" category or specific part."

"To find out the year of your cart, you will need to know the VIN. This number is located on a metal plate that is affixed to the frame directly above the driver's rear wheel."

"If your cart was made in the '60s, the first two numbers designate the year and the next letter(s) designate the model as in this example:64DC800025"

"This VIN would indicate that the cart was made in '64 and is a model DC

If your cart was made in the '70s or '80s, it will follow this format:3B12234 H4"

"This VIN indicates it was made by Harley Davidson in '74 (H4) and is a model D (3B).
1982 was the LAST year that Harley Davidson produced a golf cart."

"MANUFACTURE & YEAR

The letter H (made in the '70s) or J (made in the '80s) indicates the cart was manufactured by Harley Davidson

The letter C (made in the '80s) or D (made in the '90s) designates Columbia as the manufacture.

The last number indicates the year of the decade."

H7='77
J1='81
C4='84

GAS MODELS '63 to '81
3B=D
5B=DC
7C=D4
3K=CLASSIC

'82 to '83
3B=D3
5K=DX4

'84 to '85
3B=G3
5K=G4
7K=U4

Is it a 4 wheeled cart or 3 wheeled cart?

There are no lift kits. Get a welder and some steal and an imagination.

It is a 4 wheeled model. I don't think i could keep a lifted three wheeled model upright for to long. The serial number by what you indicated shows it to be a 82 year model With the DX4. As to the lift kit, thanks for the info, i kinda figured that is what i was would have to do just by surfing around looking for them. Good thing i am handy with steel fabrication.

Thank you for your help.

When i get it home i will have to post pictures of the process.

A lot of time has past..... What were you able to do? or did you change your plan? We are thinking of bigger, more aggressive tires, but might go further on our 1982 model D3.

An update is i worked on the cart, was able to get it running one direction only. Reverse. I could not ever get the cart to run in forward. Gave up on the cart and let it sit. dont have any plans for it now.

Were you getting a 12 volt multimeter reading on both the forward and reverse positions on the directional/on switch?
