Picked up a 74 "D"
Hello, found this forum while searching for info on a '74 model "D" I just picked up. Planning on using it for bumming around the farm, woods and local rural county roads.
It's a bit rough, but usable; not planning on doing a complete restore. I got the thing running with a new coil, plug, plug wire, points, condenser and a quick carb cleaning. Needs a new throttle cable, this one is junk; cart has "fast" only right now (no governor on it). Found a service manual on-line (actually found the link here - thanks) that answers most questions, but have a couple to ask... 1) What type battery to use (i.e. a "deep cycle" type or just the regular automotive type)? 2) Do these things sit still at idle (minimum throttle), or are they totally direct-drive? And, if direct-drive, will a longer belt allow them to sit still at idle? Or is there a better way to disengage the drive at minimum throttle? The way I plan on using this, it would make more sense if it would idle at stop... I can modify the throttle start/kill circuit with a couple relays easily enough, but that does no good if the cart drives away at idle. Hey, nice to have found this place and thanks for any input... Looking forward to exchanging ideas. Whitespider |

Re: Picked up a 74 "D"
Wellcome,
They dont idle well, I just replaced my belt last season and it will move with the engine running. If it is a good runner you should have no problem with the start and stop. I am not sure on the battery, i have a small mower battery in mine and its too small. Craigscarts has a colectoin of used parts for these and the knoulege to go with it. i am sure he will be along soon. Again welcome to the forum. |

WELCOME spider!!
As far as I always saw it, a good car battery is what you should use. like Jeggers said,if she starts well, there should not be a problem, plus if you let these things idle, they get warm pretty quick! The clutches take care of the start stop thing. Love to see some pix if ya' could! If Jeggers can't help ya' Craigs will....Good Peoples! |
