'77 cart, top speed and backfire?
My 77 3 wheeled cart, runs pretty good, but every so often will backfire once. I'd set the timing ( think I did, followed on of the ways i'd found on here) doesn't do it much just everynow and then.
I'd mentioned something in a post before, about the top end speed, one answer i'd got is probably right, which was about maybe needing a new belt. which I'm going to try. I'm not looking for a tire burner, but I've seen on here where people said theres are running 20mph top end, mine does about 8 to 9mph, maybe 10 on a bit of a hill. Just wondering if thats right or if not is the belt going to make that much differance? or am I missing something? |

Re: '77 cart, top speed and backfire?
If she only backfires once, that's pretty good!
Mine sounds like a firing range Just kidding! If she only does it every once in a while, that doesn't sound like a problem. But She sounds slow,a new belt is never a bad idea,if you don't know how old the one on her is. Is the governor still on? Check the muffler for clogging. Of course just the usual tune up -air filter, plug, points & condenser, plug wire. Hope this helps a little! |

Re: '77 cart, top speed and backfire?
Great thanks for the help. Yea It just back fires everyonce and a while, I could ride it of and on around the yard 10 times then it would pop. thats about it. Yea i have no idea how old the belt is, just got the cart a week or two ago. It's a bit frayed on the edges also. I'll probably order on this week. I was actually looking on here, once I noticed some one had posted what I belive was the NAPA parts numbers for the points and cond. if i don't find it again by tomorrow I plan to order them and a carb kit for it. It will probably be fine when I do that stuff but when I get something in the garage I can't leave it alone. Sometimes thats not alway a good thing.

And no the governor is not on. I keep taking it off and on I am havin a little trouble figuring out the carb on these. I've torn many down on jeeps and trucks but this on is a little differant for me, with the governor and all.

does it backfire while your foot is on the gas or when you let off the gas? Could be that it needs a tighter spring on the carb to return back to full closed when you let off.

I belive it's mostly just as i've let off or just as I hit it. Never thought about the spring tho, its not a real good one.

Also, make sure the brake is not dragging. Yeah, the carbs work "Backwards" compared to most- |

Re: '77 cart, top speed and backfire?
yea thanks, The brakes are off, thats a good thought thanks.
Yea someone else told me about the carb I didn't know that. Handy info to know. I'm probably just trying to get the cart in front of the horse here any ways. ordering cond. points and carb kit tomorrow, and a belt probably too. Hoping that will help a lot. just out with the kids riding awhile a go and noticed the throttle is pretty well the same at half as it is full. Specially with wet ground yesterday it will pretty well spin the tires if I floor it but then doen't go much faster after that. |

Re: '77 cart, top speed and backfire?
These old girls aren't speed demons by any means,But that Kohler should be movin' her along a little faster than you say,do a tune up & at least clean out the carb & see what ya' get,Setting the throttle cable can be a bit of a hassle too!
I'll betcha the drive belt has a lot to do with it. (But what do I Know!)Heh! |

your backfire may also be throttle cable adjustment @ the peddle.
