Default Harley gas cart/ no reverse

I have an '82 Harley gas cart model D3. When I first got it, it would run in forward, and when in reverse, it would just click. The previous owner would just push it backwards, but said it ran fine in forward. Now it does the same in forward. The solenoid just clicks.

To start with check and the soleniod, then the F/R switch (forward/reverse lever) ..... There isn't an actual "reverse" in the differential. Its the motor running backwards that powers the cart to back-up. The way I understand it ....... there is a switching mechanism that has the starter turn one way for forward and the other way for reverse. The motor is just a 2 stroke. It doesn't care which way it turns.

Usually .......... Gas + air + spark = fun

If I'm wrong someone will be along here shortly to straighten you and me both out.

latersville,

Is there a way to jump across the solenoid or switch to check them? Any good recommendations for the type of 2-cycle oil?

Just search for someone in here with a "Harley cart". I think "tew45" knows these things ........ probably can tell you enough to make you dangerous As far as the correct or a suitable oil, I'd say a regular 2 stroke oil.

I use Super Tech Wal-Mart 2 cycle oil 1.5 ozs. oil per gallon of gas. I will try to find a diagram of the electric starting system for a 1982 cart and help better. But it sounds like the problem can be limited to the start system.

Could be loose wire between the starter and the switch, or the regulator. I found a loose wire on mine.

Also check your fwd rev switch, but be very careful with it, when you take it apart, the base plate is easy to break and nearly impossible to find one!

Hey rdking, I have the same issue. Just wonder what you did to fix the switch or simply replace.

Thanks
