Default Few things but mainly, fuel issue

Hello forum. Collectively, my family owns a few different carts (two gas club cars, one gas yamaha, two battery club cars). A friend of mine stumbled across an old Harley (AMF) in his grandfather's garage and, knowing that I like to tinker with carts, he gave it to me. It didn't run.

First things first. The serial number on the cart is 55-71694-H9. Is there any way to get a year of the cart from the serial number?

Second, the battery is dated 2005 so the cart likely has been run in the not-so-distant past.

Last, while doing some troubleshooting, I found that the thing has plenty of spark. I manually shot some fuel into the cylinder and, to my surprise, the thing fired up for a moment before the fuel burned off. Thinking that I might have a fuel delivery issue, I manually added fuel to the entire fuel line (filter and delivery hoses). The fuel filter and lines were all bone dry (not yet dry rotted though). Yes, I know that this is a 2 cycle engine and I used mixed gas. Also, I drained all of the gas that was in the tank and replaced with fresh. Now, after 30 secs or so of ignition, the cart sprang to life and was running just fine. I could tell right away that the carb is need of attention as the cart ran best half-choked and wouldn't run at all when not choked. After a few minutes of running, the cart died. As I suspected, the entire fuel line and filter were again dry.

Thinking that this is likely a fuel pump issue I again primed up the fuel filter. This time though, I removed the fuel line from gas tank. I hit the pedal and the cart fired right up. However, I could not feel anything sucking air into to line that I removed from the tank. It appears that the cart is not drawing fuel like it should be. I looked where I thought a fuel pump should (before the carb) but I couldn't find one. Is the fuel pump part of the carb itself?

Any insight would certainly be welcome.

The last two digits denote the year; (H9) is a 1979 model.
The fuel pump is a diaphragm affair within the carburetor... like a chain saw.

I don't believe there is a normal "fuel pump" except for like the diaph. and then it's all pulled thru with vacuum, i would guess if your having carb problems anyway I'll bet you have some bad gaskets and causeing an air leak. That would stop any fuel pull. a hint here. I just came on to my 77 earier this year and had many problems also. I bought the carb kit (like$6) and the points all at napa. the carb kit they had to order but was in the next day. theres only like three kits for that carb I just matched the pic to what i had. i will say the $6 on there was only gaskets, not any needle or things like that. and the points if you need them if you look on this site somewhere someone had posted the parts numbers. cause its also the same points for some like 70's chevy 6 cyl. any way I bet your biggest problem is air leak

Yeah, the more I look around at numerous forums it looks like bad gaskets could well be a problem. Would anyone have idea what gaskets in particular would need replaced? Just carb? I read something somewhere about the crankcase gasket too.

With regard to to carburetor, how hard is it to replace the points?

the points are very easy. on the back of the engine, there is a small round tin plate with 3 bolts holding it on. take it off and it's right there. really the only thing that was any kind of pain was when I set the timing. and it wasn't that hard. it took me a couple times but got it. I used the manual a little but mostly got the info off of this forum. just remembe you have to set it for forward and reverse. Sorry can't help much on the other gaskets besides the carb. I didn't have to go any farther than that. But I would start with the carb. specially sense the carb gasket kit is only $6 and even if you've never done it, it is easy just pay attention how you take it all apart and just reverse back together.

Great stuff guys. Thanks. I will get on this over the next week or so. I am sure that I will be posting issues as they arise.

Hi,

It's been a couple of weeks and I have finally gotten around to posting a few pics. I haven't been able to do much with the cart yet due to time constraints.

While taking the pics I found a different serial number on the frame that doesn't match the one that I previously posted (which was located in the passenger side glove compartment area. I posted a pic of the the serial number on the frame. It is 7C10587JO. Is there any way to tell what year cart this is? Someone said it was a '79 from the number in the glove compartment. I was hoping to comfirm with the frame number.

I will take more pics once I get some time. I also borrowed a compression tester and should be able to check that is that next day or two.

would anyone happen to have one of those laying around collecting dust? My 81 is missing it.

and by this serial number I would say 1980; that one on the frame is the only serial number I have ever seen on a Harley cart.
