Help, 1974, 3 wheel HD gas cart, moving same by hand!
Am working on restoring this cart and would like to know if anyone has figured out how to move this cart without motor running? It moves easily when the drive belt is off and this cart does not have the "lock out hub" mentioned in Service Manual. I wold like to be able to push the cart about in the shop as I work on it but without removing the drive belt! There must be some way of doing this?

Removing spark plug has no affect. Tried previously. There must be a neutral some how???? Anyone???

There is no neutral so the only way is the drive belt or put the rear end on a dolly of some type. The drive belt is easy to slip on and off of one clutch. A friend of mine built a long narrow furniture dolly and just put the rear wheels on it. It only took 4 casters.

OK, I'll take your word for it that there is no neutral although I do not understand it. I seem to be able to move the engine side of the drive belt by hand for instance to locate TDC. Then you take the drive belt off and the wheels move freely. What puzzles me is that when the drive belt is on the axel/ wheels lock. By what? Just do not see why.
Thanks for the answers and fast replys of past. Much appreciated. |

Re: Help, 1974, 3 wheel HD gas cart, moving same by hand!
If there was no direct link between the rear wheels and the driven clutch the cart would never move. Remove the drive belt and turn it by hand and the rear wheels should try to move. The drive belt is like a drive shaft in a car. If you put a standard transmission in a car in gear it will not move. The cart does not have a clutch and transmission. It depends on the variable pulley system for a drive ratio like a transmission therefore it doesn't need another system. Do you have a service manual? It explains some things you should know!

Re: Help, 1974, 3 wheel HD gas cart, moving same by hand!
O.K. I see that you do have a service manual so forget that. The reason the cart is hard to push with the drive belt on is the ratio between the motor and the rear wheels. One turn of the rear wheels will move the engine many Revolutions which is hard to do. When
you look at it the other direction it takes many rpm of the engine to turn the rear wheels 1 turn. Some day I will check and see exactly what that ratio is. Generally it is not too important to the end user. Just take the drive belt off and have someone hold the secondary clutch. Try to turn the wheels then turn the clutch and you will feel the difference. |
