Default Looking at 2nd cart Harley D4

Since I need a carburetor for my '87 Columbia I located something the kids might be able to run a little sooner. It's a 70s Harley Davidson D4. The seller says it needs a solenoid and a battery to run. Below is their picture.

Any help on parts for either? Thanks.

the 4 wheelers are harder to come by... if it is reasonable GET IT; you can use a regular, older Ford solenoid for that.

Don B., thanks for the reply. I remember the Ford solenoids you speak of. I had an AMC Hornet HB and a Ford Maverick as a teenager that used those. I can't remember how many times, or on which, probably both, I had to replace them.

I'm glad this isn't the ordinary cart as I love the unusual. I have seen a D 3 wheel for sale lately, but I passed on it even though it had a roof and was $200.00. On this one they are asking $300.00. I'm pretty sure it's a done deal.

alot of tractors use a similar solenoid as do trucks with "battery isolators" and snowplow trucks.... might get a heavier duty one there (might), in this day of not being able to find anything that's made somewhere besides China

I was at a salvage yard today to look for carts, but they didn't have any. What they did have was old snowmobiles. I found plenty of vacuum operated fuel pumps like the one I just bought for my Columbia. I'm thinking that carbs might be substituted as well from the right motors.

A Ford starter relay isn’t appropriate for the application; it won’t last long and could likely result in melted connections and/or burnt wires. A “starter” relay is a “momentary” relay; you need a “continuous duty” relay, the difference is in the coil. The coil of a starter relay has very low resistance so it will engage even if the battery is in a relatively low state of charge (i.e. it allows the flow of a lot of currant, causing a lot of heat build-up in the coil and wires if used continuously.) The coil of a continuous duty relay has much higher resistance, limiting currant flow and removing the heat issue. Continuous duty relays are commonly used as Battery Isolation Relays in Motor Homes and RV’s, Marine applications, Ambulances and other emergency response vehicles and equipment. Any “parts guy” worth his salt will know what you need... a relay rated for 85 amps should be more than enough (50 amps would probably be fine) and will probably be less than $25.oo.

thats why I said "like" a ford relay (though I don't think there'd be any damage beyond the solenoid itself; theve gotten cheap like $6-7 around here; but the one from a snowplow or RV would be a heavier duty...

Unhappy Re: Looking at 2nd cart Harley D4

Whitespider, thank you for the correction.

Unfortunately I had a look at this old girl today and she was in worse condition then the owner realized. The woman who was selling it knew nothing about it, so I pointed out all the work that needed to be done. I also pointed her towards this board so she could get some help from people who really know their Harleys.

I couldn't bring it home because I need space to work and it needs work. If someone needs the parts from a D4 this might be the place to start, and it would make a halfway decent basis for a modified cart. The engine seems sound, but the carburetor controls are a mess. The starter/accelerator system needs to be put back together as well. Some tinkerer got to it before the seller and had some wire tied to the throttle and what I assume was a replacement choke riveted to the floor. The cable from the choke control was in pieces.

It's sad to see a cart that has promise waiting for the right owner. Right now that just isn't me.

"worse condition than the owner realized"; as in you can now get it for a BETTER price than you first thought?

No, she's a single parent and bought it for more money then we were talking about, but if you think it's worth $275 or more she could probably use the extra money I just don't have the workspace and time right now for that much work. How hard is it to find wheel studs? There were two missing on the right rear wheel.

Yeah, I didn't list everything that's needed. I didn't want to depress anyone.
