Help selecting tires for '68 D
Back on my '68 gasser restoration. Will order tires and hub caps this week. Still mixed on what tires to purchase. When I bought cart it had turf tires on the rear and a ribbed tire front. Was thinking of staying the same or mounting a saw tooth tire on front. Thought is that a turf tire on front may offer poor ride?
Suggestions appreciated. Thanks. |

Re: Help selecting tires for '68 D
My friends HD 3 wheeler has turf tires and I have ribbed. I can' tell a bit of difference on pavement but my ribbed tires slip up a steep incline in my back yard where the grass is thin but plenty of moist top soil. I bet the turf tires would not have slipped. Didn't get a chance to try my buddies cart while it was here though. If you actually wear out a set of these tires before they dry rot, congrats to you for being able to ride that much. At 15 MPH, I dont think the front tire has much say in this either way. If you were really off roading it, then a better grippping front tire may steer better in soft soil.

Re: Help selecting tires for '68 D
My concern is rough ride from front turf on pavement. At the same time, concerned about traction of a ribbed tire in wet grass. Guess I just can't have both!!

Re: Help selecting tires for '68 D
I put turf tires all around mine. The have plenty of traction in the wet grass & ride well on the pavement. I had the same thoughts that your are having & GLAD I went for a tire with a little more traction, plus they look alot better then the sawtooth tires

Re: Help selecting tires for '68 D
I used 6 Craftsman rototiller tires that I "found"
She bounces a little on pavement, I could fix by aligning the rims better, but it doesn't bother me much. She does get GREAT traction in dirt, mud (pretty good for not being lifted) & snow up to about a foot! Not for everyone-but I like it! |

Re: Help selecting tires for '68 D
Decided to order 3 Kenda 18x8.5x8 sawtooth, new white wheels and Crager SS hub caps. Mostly pavement riding for me w/occassional turf, no dirt.
Will purchase tires mounted on wheel assy's from Palmetto Specialty Tire, SC. New tires, wheels & shipping, $157. Seemed like a good deal to me. Thanks for your input! |
