Question Remove steering wheel

Need help on removing steering wheel from 1974 HD, model D. My manual picture is of no help and instructions state a wedge attachment is needed but the picture ( Figure 2F-75 on page 3-37 ) is blurred badly and of no use.

Also where can I obtain a smaller steering wheel to fit the called for spline bore diameter of .720" ?

Have cart running now and it really moves out at full throttle! ( but it uses a bit of choke always to get out of idle and moving). Will send before and after pictures soon of how we have come along repairing fiberglass, painting, new floor mats, upholstery, etc.

Thanks for past help to date and hope there will be a somewhat simple way to get this wheel off with your experience and instructions. (Whacked it a few times after removing nut, but it stays put firm even after sitting for overnight with penetrating oil applied.) Spuron

I have used a method to remove the wheel the same as cars: Loosen the nut a couple of turns or so until the nut is slightly higher than the shaft. Use two hands to pull the steering wheel up then get someone to use a brass hammer to hit the nut and the wheel should come loose. An Easy go wheel will fit.

Last resort....get a gear/steering wheel puller. I bought an 8" gear puller to pull mine, from Orscheln's for $25.

Had a go for sure! Tried 3 different wheel pullers, modified them, and tried everything you suggested too. All that happened is that the plastic wheel bends and wheel has not budged! What does the special part wedge attachment Part #95637-61 consist of?

Any more suggestions for me? Sure would like to replace that steering wheel!

Pull up hard on the wheel with both hands and have someone hit the loose nut hard and it should come loose. Be sure to protect the shaft and nut. If the wheel is really tight this method will work. I don't see how a wedge would work since (at least on my cart) there is nothing to wedge against. But I will check my manuals.

Thanks "tew". Tried your suggestion and also tried pulling up on wheel while using wheel puller and smacking center screw of puller to no avail. Drives me nuts. Have used penetrating oil-nut loosing oil for 2 days and 2 nights also. Strange it can be so "frozen".

Do you want to replace the wheel and do not want the old one? Is the old wheel partial plastic? Another way is to use a home made wheel puller. If the old wheel is plastic it will have a metal inset with splines to fit the shaft you can adapt a bar to fit under and a 2 bolt puller to remove the wheel. Or PM me your e-mail and I will send a photo of the puller that HD used on one of their wheels and that might help. If I can find it!

I am running into the same issue. Tried 3 pullers, tried pulling while hitting the nut with a hammer, and tried everything that tew45 mentioned.
I have a brand new billet wheel sitting on my bench and its driving me crazy. Any other advice? I am NOT trying to keep the old wheel so I don't care if I destroy it getting it off. Now that I think about it, it already is pretty much destroyed from all the different methods I tried to pull it

I had the same issue on my club car. Sprayed it with penetrating oil for a few days and then used a heat gun to apply a little heat. It came right off.
