Thumbs up Fuel draw issue fix

I have found that if you aren't getting fuel to your carb, or you feel the carb isn't getting enough fuel, here is a possible solution. You can install a micro external fuel pump. If you do go this route, which eliminates fuel delivery issues on a functioning engine, you must get one that delivers a very small flow rate. I installed one that had a 2-3.5 lb flow rate. Installing the pump is simple to do yourself. Ground the pump right on the frame and power gets supplied off the solenoid at the same connection point as the accelerator. Mind you I installed this after a complete engine overhaul and carb rebuild. This works wonders for anyone that wants a modern upgrade for these antique systems.

I just finished installing a fuel pump on a 1980 with simply outstanding results. The cart is flying and no longer needs choked.....ever. Understand that this fuel pump was added after a top-end rebuild and carb rebuild failed to provide adequate fuel for good combustion.

Here are some tips you may find useful:

The pump I bought was a "Mr. Gasket" model #42S. This pump delivers 2-3.5 lbs of fuel and is available at tons of places for around $40. I got mine off the shelf at Pep Boys

This particular model of fuel pump was particulary easy to install as its mounting holes are a perfect fit for a simple install directly to the frame with no drilling. I was able to install the pump with a 2" muffler clamp to the rear of the battery. See pics.

Reposition the fuel filter between the gas tank and the pump to prevent debris from making it to the pump.

There are two wires on the pump, negative (black) and positive (red). The black can be grounded to the frame although I mounted the pump close enough to the battery that I grounded mine directly to the battery's negative post. The red wire gets connected to the second solenoid post from the front. In other words, if you are looking down on the solenoid from the battery side, connect the red wire to the second post from the front.

That should do it. As HDinsane said, this truly is a worthwhile and inexpensive upgrade that will solve many fuel delivery issues.

Did you remove the choke butterfly from the carb to increase airflow? Did you concider tapper boring and matching with the cylinder. Could pick up 2 or 3 miles per hour

I did not do any of your suggestions. To be honest, this isn't my cart. It belongs to my father-in-law who just it from his dad. It hadn't run in years so I thought it would be fun to screw around with it.

The cart is currently going 19 mph (measured with a handheld GPS). That's plenty fast enough for the in-laws. Hell, that's 19 mph faster than it was going a couple of months ago.

Lol I agree anything over 15mph is way to fast. Love the mod, heading to the auto store this weekend.

Did you remove the fuel strainer and check ball from the pickup hose after installing the fuel pump?

What do you mean by " taper boring and matching with the cylinder " ?

Taper bore is a lite bore to the carb. It helps the carb adamize the fuel mixture. Then you can use your dremmel to match the intake to the cyclindar. Both will help low end power. Smooth start and nice lowend power band. I cleaned up my intake manifold, intake port and exhaust port. Simple stuff, makes me feel good. I am one of those idiots that like to modify stuff.
