power loss problem
i just my 1980 gas harley rebuild and ready to go, the motor seams to run great but lacks power.
upon start up it is slow to get up to speed and when it gets there it seems like top speed sould be a little faster. when you go up a steep hill it is very very slow. i dont know if im having clutch issues or what. i also put on a new belt and no differance it also goes alot faster in reverse and gets there alot quicker please help if you have any pionters for me thanks kelly |

Re: power loss problem
your cart should run around 18 to 20 MPH when tuned right and in top condition without the governor so; If the governor is removed and there id no mechanical binding (raise one rear wheel off the ground and check for mechanical problems while running) then I would check timing in forward and reverse, point gap, making sure the ignition is tuned properly. The Harley engine will turn faster in reverse due to piston design but will not run faster in reverse. It is just a little quicker on start up. Also make sure the fuel mixture is correct. I would use a little extra oil the first tank of gas then use the proper mixture after a little break in. Use 2 oz per gallon of 2 cycle oil during break in and 1.5 oz oil per gallon after.

Re: power loss problem
Ok I will have to check all that plus I did run a little heavy on the oil mixture of 3 oz per gallon for this first tank

Re: power loss problem
Running that much oil will not hurt anything but it will smoke a lot. If you keep running too much oil your muffler will stop up and cause problems but it would take a long while. It would also foul plugs but again it would be a while.
