Harley Davidson 77 DE40 electric
I recently acquired a Harley Davidson 1977 4 wheel electric cart (de40)… the electric motor is burned out according to the guy I got it from but not sure if he knows anymore then I do. I have stripped the cart down to the frame and hopefully this week get the frame straighten out in a few places and powder coated… can anyone tell me if I can put any other type of electric motor in this cart? This cart will be restored back to originally (or as close as I can get it) but so far in my searches I am not having any luck on the electric generator. Also, has anyone ever installed a lift kit on one of the HD golf carts?
Any advice, comments, pictures, offers, or conversation will be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Re: Harley Davidson 77 DE40 electric
It may sem stupid or a waste of money. But have you had the motor tested? It may be good and a bad board, or contact. Im not very knoldgeable with the sparky side but this should be a solid state with no computer to control it. Neighbor has a 76 taylor dunn and same situation 375 ofr a new bord rather then peiceing it out and hes hauling the cart around!
Maybe give plumquick a call and see what they would do to help on it they are a site sponsor! Plus if its bad they might be able to get it spinning for you. Just a thought. |

@ badams12, shoulds like I'm entering the same project as you. Picking up a HD 4 wheel golf cart this evening and have the same questions dealing with lift kits, parts etc. Can you turn me on to any sources that you have found concerning parts.

Pull the back end of the motor apart and check the brushes and clean the contact points with electrical cleaner. Most of the time the electric motors get killer from low voltage and a simple rebuild and clean up will do the trick. Good luck and keep me posted.
