New member here- considering an HD project cart

Hi all!

Just joined- forums have been very helpful to me with my past projects, and lately I've gotten the hankering to build a sweet golf cart to haul the family around in ( they just legalized golf carts in our community). I wanted to do things differently, and found a Harley Davidson 4 wheel golf cart that looks to be in terrible shape- I love it!

My question would be to those with expertise in HD carts- when I go to look at it, what do I look for that might be trouble areas for these carts? I was planning to look for rust in the frame, checking to see if the motor is frozen, compression test, pull the plug, check the belts, etc. anything specific to these carts outside of standard mechanical inspection?

My plan is to disassemble the whole thing, sandblast and powder coat the frame, lift it, custom paint, custom seats, killer stereo, mini fridge, solar roof, led lighting, and to refresh the engine a bit ( maybe boring it out for a little more "oomph". ). I'm just finishing the restoration of a 68 Plymouth fury convertible, so working on something smaller will be a welcome change.

Though I am far from being an expert, I just completed restoring a 1980 without too much difficulty. Your thoughts about capture much of what you need to look for. Two items to think about:
1) There is a link to a repair manual posted here in the forums. Do a search and download it. You'll be glad you did.
2) These Harley carts do not have fuel pumps. The engine compression was engineered to draw fuel from the tank but this system becomes inefficient with the passage of time. Check your perspective cart's fuel draw. Don't discount a cart for not drawing fuel as there are some fairly inexpensive fixes. Just one more thing to look at.

cool another Mopar guy.... I have a 78 Sport Fury myself... and an 80 Volare that I am custom-restoring. I'd like to find me a nice 71-0lder Dodge truck and a 73-74 Roadrunner/Satellite Sebring.

yeah I could say the same about my 67 Barracuda fastback, 76 charger SE, 75 Cordoba, and of course my Dad's 76 Feather Duster that went to my brother, that was SUPPOSED to be my 1st car when I turned 16.... /6, 3 speed on the floor, manual steering and brakes...
and the truck that just left last nite; '83 D 250 that i have a feeling I'll see back again (hope so!) after my cousin's done with it.... alot better truck than the sardine can 94 Dakota I now have because I drive too much to feed the 83..... funny the Dakota is 3/4 of the engine (3.9 V6), injected, computer and all that crap but not "that much" better on gas than my non computerized 318 4 barrel.... I'm gonna miss my old truck. and it was more dependable than the day is long....but I need a truck, and with being back in school full time at 44, school being 40 miles away, any improvement in that department (gas tank) I will notice....

oh god 225 with the putsh button tranny, holes all throught the floor(free a/c), just had the front end rebuilt and the seat redone to match, and she met a bridge in west virginia. rear axle let the left tire go with the axle out of the housing, perfeom a 360 on the turnpike, find a bridge and ride it til you stop! wv police told me if i did that in a car from today i would have to be cut out. i simly walked away, pulled my emblems off for the memories and cried for 2 days! that car went from ft bragg n.c. to columbus ohio for 2 years no issues. mother nature just decided it was time to let her go. **** thing got 19 mpg for a 62! it still bring a tear to me when i see the pictures in the picture book.

yeah many of my old carbureted V8s were better on gas than anything I have currently; My Fury is away for the winter (hafta with all the salt they use)
found another Fury I'd love to have for sale today, a '69 convertible.
I learned to drive on a '73 Fury 9 passenger wagon, fake woodgrain and all.

I`m new too, Haveing fun with my Melex golf cart. I can use alot of help and tips.
