Default KaBam

The cart runs great. Starts right up and has plenty of power. When I let of the gas and then re-apply the gas, KaBam!, backfire. Any advice on how to prevent backfires? Can't be good for the engine plus the neighbors might think I am shotting off guns again

Very common if you have by passed your throttle gov and leave the rev limiter. It cuts the spark but the fuel is still pumping so it loads up everything. Once it gets spark again KABAM as you put it. You either need to reconnect and adjust your gov to get the speed you want or spend $30 for a tiny tach and disconnect the rev limiter.

there aint no rev limiter on a harley! and what good would the tac do on a two stroke engine. all it has is a piston dancing in a jug. no valves. and im pretthy sure the previous owners ripped the governor system off along time ago! i would look at the carb adjustment first, and cahec the point timing. sounds like more of a timing/points issue. squid dint you have the sheared off wodruff key causeing it to turn, but no start?

WOW ya I totally missed the fact it's a 2 stroke my bad. On my ATC250R only time it backs fire is when the plug is going bad or the coil. But that isn't a Harley 2 stroke. Do those engines run back wards for reverse?

I did adjust the throttle cable a few weeks ago. I made the adjustment so that the butter fly was wide open. I thought it was strange that it was not set to be wide open. Should I just back it off a little? Any rules of thumb on the adjustment? thanks

adjustment needs to be done at the pedal end. you'll want micro to click just before carb starts to open. this also means gas is shut off before spark.

Thanks that makes a lot of sense. I will play around with it this weekend.
