Default Flying Flange

I keep trashing woodroof keys on my crankshaft and my front flange is breaking loose. It looks like the crankshaft increase in diamiter as the flange slides back tords the engine. My flange slides freely back and forth on the crank shaft and rubbs on the engine. I just rebuilt the topend and the engine runs great so I do not want to replace the crankshaft. Anyone have a good Macgyver idea to fix my issue? What are the odds I can just replace the front flange? I am thinking of renting a welder (what could possible go wrong)! Thanks for all your help as alway!!

There was just something about a thread titled "Flying Flange" by "Supersquid" that meant I had to look at it.

I'm with Cki on this. Between the slop on the shaft and the slop on the clutch side, I think your doomed to replace both.

Sorry!

For the record, I think I am smoked but I just had to give it one last try. I went to the hardware store and purchased JB weld (you can fix anything with JB Weld), huge washer and huge new woodroof key. Pressed the huge washer on the crankshaft with the Flange/transition. Using my Dremel I open the woodroof key hole on the crankshaft and the cut the flange so that the huge woodroof key will fit. Then I mixed some JB Weld and glopped it all over the poor crankshaft. After all at this point I have nothing to loose. Slapped the flange on the JB Weld coated cranksaft and put everything back togther. Now I am waiting for the JB Weld to setup. So do you think it will work? Did you know JB Weld has a tinsel streighth of 13,000 pounds!

I Think at best, its' gona be temporary.I think some replacements should be on the list. With the egged out clutch-bore,its' going to want to wobble under load. The key-slot has lost its' strength in the direction of loading as well.

You may look into some copper shim stock. It may fill the void and lock the clutch
in place?

Well my JB weld, duck tape and used washers seems to be holding. I drove the working train wreck for about 20 minutes and WoW she runs perfectly. Now lets hope the golf cart gods watch over me for the summer. I am not optimistic

Good news bad news. The JB weld held, very strong stuff! Bad new the back of the crank broke off and the flange/everything went splat on the ground. Did not see that coming. I need a new crank and flange. Can anyone make a recommendation on where to purchase a new crank, flange and gaskets? Harley 1969. Thanks

Threw it out of balance when it was loose and finally caused it to fail.
