Default Harley has no spark

I am trying to get a 73 gas Harley cart to run. I am running into some problems I put new points and condenser in. I push the gas pedal the engine runs off starter but no fire it will idle. my question is do the points need gapped? I also put a new coil in

Gap the points to .022 and set the timing in reverse and forward. If the point plate has not been moved just set the points and try to start the engine. Make sure the coil is one that has an internal resistor or does not use an external current limiting resistor.

yup sure does! gap at .020. then set the timing. and then you will have to check it in reverses. the spark happens at 25degrees after tdc on fwd and 25 degrees tdc reverse. the motor runs one direction in fwd and in the other in reverse. its a bear, but rember the sprk happens whenthe points are open, not closed.

im sure tew45 will chime in on this, or one of the other harley gurus to correct me if im wrong. tew45 has a lot of great info. helped me through a 69 save from the dump.
im alos sure theat they will ask you to verify that you have compression in your motor. it is very important to have good compression on theses.

if you have any questions, we can walk yo through.

I found out the points were not gapped. I have spark now but its not getting gas into the cylinder. I am thinking the carb is shot. the intake was caked with stuff so I am sure the carb is too I am thinking about ordering a new one versus rebuilding it. I am trying to save this old cart from the junk yard. as for the starter not shutting off I found out the gas pedal was sticking got that fixed. what should the compression be on this 73?

Compression ideally should be 90 to 100 PSI if the rings are seated or not worn. You should just clean and inspect the carb. and fuel pump. New carbs are expensive. The old one may just need a good cleaning. If the fuel has soured, clean out the entire system.

I purchased a new carb installed it and cart will not start, I put a compression tester on the engine it was running about 20 psi. I am thinking the motor needs rebuilding. My question is how difficult is it doing a rebuild on this engine? I have the service manual but my mechanical skills are limited. I would really like to save this cart body is in really good shape for its age. If anyone has any advice for me let me know

The older 2 cycle engines usually wore out 3 top ends to a lower bearing replacement but we usually did a re-bore with new piston and rings. However today we can get a new top end assembly for about the same price. A cylinder, piston, rings, and gaskets can be purchased from AACO for around 131.00 plus freight. The complete top end is relativity easy to replace then save the old one for re-boring and a new piston, ring assy.

4 bolts hold the head on, 2 bolts hold the muffler pipe to the jug, and a screw clamps the jug sleeve on the jug. then is some cleaning the base gasket off, and it self explaintory. i do not know if the new kit has to have the rings trimmed , i got a over bore kit, and i had to have the rings ground to fit.

oh and the new piston is pinned! this is were the piston rings meet, and if i rember right the rings are very easly stretched! iff all is installed correctly on the piston, you dont need a piston compressor to instlall. the jug is tapered for this. and make sure you install the piston correctly. it have a hole on the side that matches the blow out hole in the block. (at least that what i was told what it is) so thats what i call it.

oh and make sureyou install the base gasket correctly, you can put it on wrong. it looks like it the correct way, but one side is bigger then the other.

so basicly, with some basic tools, you can do it. 1/2 in, 3/8in 7/16 in, yo can do it in about 2 hrs or so. keep it clean inside, and keep it lubed!
