!979 Harley gas Or should I say NO gas
I have a 79 HD gas. When I got it it had a bad piston so we replaced that. During the re-install a nut was left loose and sucked into the engine soooo we got a new engine. we have everything installed, new seals, fresh bearings, gaskets, 110 compression but not getting fuel. The reed valve doesn't seem to move at all and when I put smoke near the intake it looks like it is blowing it instead of sucking. I am at wits end as there is only one place in Indy that will even consider working on older HD carts and I'm not real sure I want to take it there. Any help you can give will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this.

Re: !979 Harley gas Or should I say NO gas
Sounds like I shouldn't try this one but here goes anyway! An internal engine needs: Fuel, compression, and a spark at the right time so this one may have that with complications. The compression seems a little high so the muffler may be plugged. Remove the muffler and see if the compression drops
Put a little fuel in the chamber and see if it fires. Is the (New) engine timed correctly? |

The muffler is off completely. I set the timing just like the book says but I don't know what you mean by the piston being half a turn off. Please explain that one to me. And thanks in advance for the help

Re: !979 Harley gas Or should I say NO gas
Ok the piston call was dead on, we had it half a turn out. I RECHECKED the timing just like the book says and it is still blowing. I put smoke near the intake and it is blowing like a fan. I'm so stumped. Points open and close as directed. Is there something I am just missing because it feels like I am running in circles here doing the same things over and over. At my wits end. Thanks again for any input.

bad reed pedals or the reed plate might be in backwards.
