HD 3-wheeler runs at high rpm
Hi Everyone,
Long time forum reader, first time forum poster here. I have a Harley 3 wheeler that I bought of an old lady who owned if for 35 years while providing basically no maintenance to it during that time! A few minor issues have come up over the past months and I've used many of the archived posts to solve them, however, i have not found a thread that covers this one yet: When i drive the cart it starts at low rpms and slowly builds up speed, purrs like a kitten and all is good.....then.....i get down the fairway and let off the gas as I get closer to the ball. When i press the gas again, the engine fires up and it's like I'm stuck in "second gear" so it will only go fast, no low rpm option at all. The cart jumps and automatically wants to go high speed. If i let the engine sit for 2 minutes and then try again, it's all good and I can build up speed from low rpm's/ As you can imagine, when i get stuck in high rpm, it creates a lot of heat and smoke and is a VERY jerky ride. Any suggestions or clarification questions would be helpful! THANKS |

One thing comes to mind, it may be that the clutches are not closing back to low ratio?

could also be the drive belt is wore to thin and dropping down to deep into the primary. then it gets caught there.

Thanks Gents - going out to the course tonight to prop the back up and take a look while running it. It feels like a clutch thing since it does drop down after it sits a minute, will keep ya posted!

Re: HD 3-wheeler runs at high rpm
So i had a guy take a look at it....he's thinking its a throttle cable that isnt working and is maybe keeping the throttle held wide open....
Sound legit? |

Re: HD 3-wheeler runs at high rpm
So here it is!
Throttle cable came off of the throttle. Just had to hook it back on. simple as that. Apparently the reason it was resetting itself when i would stop is because the lever was also loose and would close when the cart hit hte brakes. So a quick tighten to the lever and a re-hook up of the cable (and I made some additions to the cable so it wont happen again.) and problem solved.... now to find a canopy! Thanks for the help gents. |
