Default Still having issues taking hard throttle.

What has been done.

New Carb, new spark plug, points set at .022, new condenser, new fuel, fuel filter, cleaned tank. I have fuel drawing up the lines and it seems to draw it from the tank quite easy. Compression seems ok but I have only used the finger over the plug hole test. The owner had a new top end put on it before it went unused for 3-4 years. The vaccume ports in the manifold and spacer are free and clear of debris.

This cart starts up awesome, but I have to have it at full choke to get the cart moving but starts to slow because its running rich. If I push the choke off as that happens I can get full speed from the cart and run along at wide open. The problem then comes back if I let off the gas and try to re-accelerate but I then can get speed back out of it by running the choke.

Some questions I have:

1. Is there suppose to be a check valve in the fuel pick up?
2. Has anyone experienced how they run with a restricted muffler?
3. Anyone know the Vaccume spec on the pulse for the fuel pump?

Tonight I am going to try and run it with the exhaust pipe off and also set the timing.

It seems so much like a fuel problem but that end of things is spot on.

I Hd a 69 with a plugged muffler. the only way i could get it to run was full throttle and feather the choke. i found the muffler plugged by mistake, when i burned my gloves when i touched it by accident. the muffler was hotter then the engine! ran with out the muffler(straight pipe) no issues. just a little noisy! im sure tew will chime in on the checkvalve. i have the 67 and 69 and neither have one.

Update:

I lied the cart does not start well unless Its choked 3/4 to full. Once its starts I can push the choke off and keep it running at low rpm. To get to high rpm I have to again choke it till I`m moving and push the choke off when it starts to flood out. It will cruise at high rpm until I let off the throttle again.

I did try it with the muffler off and It did not run any better.

Points and timing are set to the correct setting. This bothers me though cause for the heck of it I advanced and retarted the timing by quite a bit and the cart still performed the same. None the less I put it back to the spec.

I really thought I had it when I pulled the reed assy off and noticed the gasket was covering 3/4 or better of the vaccume hole. I corrected that and it did not change a thing.

Not trusting my finger over the plug hole compression test I did a cylinder leak down test and got less than 5% leak past the rings. So I know the top end is fine.

I`m at a loss. My gut is now leaning towards the crank seals.

When it dies what does the spark plug look like? Timing can be tricky so make sure it is correct. I just replaced my crank seals easy job but the tools can be a pain. How does it run if you jack it up? I am facing the same issue after a rebuild so I ordered a new carb kit, point and condenser.

Spark plug is pretty lean looking. Runs a little better w/no load, but has the same tendancys. New seals will be here tomorrow.

Well....

Someone really screwed up when they rebuilt this motor at one time. The didnt use crankcase gaskets and left out the seal on the flywheel side.

Guess no one ever told them that those gaskets were for spacing cause you can see where the chops of the crank has been rubbing on the cases.
Behind the bearing on the clutch side there were 3 very thin flakey metal washers, does anyone know if they are suppose to be there?

Also does the seal go on the outside of that bearing or the inside?

I don't use crank case gaskets either. I use permatex aviation form a gasket. works great. the thing that keeps the crank fin the center is the retaining ring on the shaft. I also use a spacing washer like on the big twin crank shaft. Depends which end of the crank you are talking about. Clutch side oil seal is on the outside the flywheel side is not. Do you have a manual?

It should have a check valve in the tank. I used to get them here for $4.95. Water Sports MFG Screened In-Tank Fuel Pickup

This is a link to the manual. Just go over to your friends house and print it out. I used the gasket. I think the gasket will last longer and it only cost me 2 dollars. Then again my cart is still not running.

Sometimes I don't have gaskets and Permatex works. It was used to join the old VW cases. When I do have gaskets and use them I coat both sides with Permatex. If you use Permatex, do the job right for the cases may not come apart easily.
