Default 1979 HD 3 wheel Restore Project

I have started a project that may be "bigger than I can chew". A small group of high school guys and I (their youth pastor) are attempting the restoration with little experience and a small budget. I will keep you all posted during the year with updated photo's and may have some technical questions along the way. Which is the purpose of posting here in the first place. I would love to get any feedback you may have...both advice and horror stories.

I should also add:

1. The cart was free
2. It runs...but not well. A few parts will need to be replaced.
3. It was patched poorly in places which will make the restore a little more time consuming.
4. The body work will be the most difficult. One of the fathers of my students is a small engine repair wizard so we are solid on that front.

We were inspired by the following photo.

1. Engine rebuild so it purrs like a kitten
2. fix the fiberglass holes and cracks
3. gloss black paint with Orange as a second color. (No design yet)
4. recover the seats
5. Chrome whatever we can
6. Use it as a golf cart for the years to come.

We are going to inspect the cart next week and make a detailed list of what needs doing engine wise.

Things I know already

1. It needs a new muffler.
2. I am hoping a tune up and fresh gas mix will solve the rough starting issue. It runs well once I get it going.
3. We are also going to clean and paint the parts that are working fine to give it a new look. Any tips on that?

I will add our complete engine/parts list next week.

peace

What is the compression supposed to be? We read 35 lbs but we assume it should be more like 90-100.

Edited note: we open up the cylinder and found metal shavings and a gouge. has any one bored out a cylinder and is it worth it?

2. brake pads

4. Air cleaner assembly clean up and repair.
5. tune up kit
6. fuel tank clean-up and paint
7. clean and polish most parts
8. new gas cap/fuel gauge
9. clean up battery and case
10. new negative battery cable
11. Bore cylinder to 2.780 and replace piston/rings
