Default bubbling through engine seal

The crank seal was blown out on the motor of the 76 I am working on, changed that seal and after doing a few other things took it for a drive to test it out. I noticed fuel/oil mix bubbling out of the seam which splits the engine (not sure what it's called). Checked the muffler, it is not plugged you can blow into it with no restriction.

Looking at a teardown to replace that gasket and will likely do piston ring while it is apart.

Am I on the right track? Not sure why the internal pressure is blowing out there but it could also be why I get some backfiring if it sucks air in when letting off the gas right?

I should add one comment, when the muffler is off the bubbling from the engine seal is much less than when the muffler is on. We checked for the muffler being plugged though and it doesn't seem restricted at all when you blow into it.

Any help appreciated.

bbq the muffler! get it cherry red, then aloww it to cool, then drop it tand shake the crud out. but a blow gun from a air compressor will not put enough air volume through the muffler. as tew says, seal it up with silicone. get the good ultra gray stuff, not the clear,, light blue, black is good too, but the ultra gray is great stuff! no need for seals with this stuff. but idf you do seperate the cae, be advised you need a flywheel puller to get it off. very hard to get or find. get with tew or graigs carts for ideas on this way.
you will need a new jug base gasket and head gasket, and exhualts gasket. you might as well reseal both crank seals too. you would be stupid not to do those while your a t that point.

The engine cases may not be sealed good. Also back pressure from plugged muffler should not be much of a problem. If you separate the cases use the gaskets ans Permatex aviation Form-a-gasket material.

i have heard you do it over a big old bonfire. i was also told to por some diesel or kero in the muffler and let it soak for a few hours. then when the fires nice and hot, set it in the fire. watch the tail pipe and inlet pipe, just let it bbq in the fire for a few hours flipping it every so often. tehn pull it out and let it cool. then when it cool, tap it on a hard surface. this will knock all remaining crap loose, and shake it out. thast the way i was told to do it. i was going to bbq the 67 muffler, but found out that it was so plugged, the previous owners drilled 10 3/4 in holes in the bottom of it, after cutting the endes off and welding them back in place cause it was so plugged! it runs right know! but nned to get a new muffler. it was the old style that they put a 4 inch section of emt conduiunt on it to peut the muffler in to the frame, giving it dual exhaulst!
