1987 columbia
I just picked up a 1987 Columbia golf cart. It has no oil tank for the gas but I think it was oil injected from the factory. Have people been known to pull the oil injection setup and just mix the gas. I'm fine with that. Is there a problem doing this. What is the mix ratio. Where would the tank for the oil injection be?
How do I tell if the clutch belt is adjusted properly. The clutch appears to be working properly but it feels like it should engage earlier in the rpm. When it does engage it seems to jerk more than it should. I looked at the belt and I will be replacing, but just didn't know if there was an adjustment or anything. Does anyone have a picture of the original fwd/rev lever, mine is rigged. Thanks, Jason |

Re: 1987 columbia
Welcome to the forum. I hope we can help you. Download the manual closest to the year of your cart. There just seems to be a supplement but it will still help. I have only worked on carts older than 1980 so I will not be able to help you much. The oil mixture has been told by cowboysclassics. The belt change is good but you need to check the condition of the clutches (check the service manual). I don't know which forward/reverse switch you use so I cant help you there. I don't know if it is on the dash switch or the floor. Check the earlier posts and check switch malfunctions and what has been done to repair the problem.

Re: 1987 columbia
Jason, just found this thread. I have an 87 columbia as well. Yes, it was oil injected from the factory. The oil tank was mounted in front of the gas tank like shown in the picture. I disabled the oil injection years ago because it didn't seem to ever use any and I was afraid of buring up the engine. I am acutally in the process of hooking it back up to see if I can get it working again. From the people I have talked to with these carts, disabling that injection system is fairly comon. The hoses dry rot from age and loose the suction ability and it's usually easier to just unhook the cable and put oil in the gas tank.
Wish I could help you with the clutch problem, but I haven't worked on that yet. The forward and reverse should be controlled by the key between the front seats. This cart never had a transmission to change from forward or reverse. They just wired the starter to the key so when you switch the key, you change the direction the motor runs. If you have a lever your cart was most likely modded with a transmission of some sort by the previous owner. Once the pistons get worn out, I have heard of people having problems getting the motor to run in reverse, so they put in a mechanical transmission to keep the motor allways running in forward. Hope this helps. |
