Update and question regarding 76 Harley restore
I attached a few pictures of the cart I've been working on, a couple of questions I have as well:
1. After replacing piston and rings the compression is 95 both in forward and reverse. Is this fine or is it low? We didn't bore out the cylinder because it seemed fine. 2. The back end of the cart is slightly lower than the front, I replaced the rear shock but did not change the springs. If I swap out for a set of used springs I likely won't see any difference? 3. The cart is running much better than when I got it, but in order to have decent power we had to advance the timing ahead of factory setting. When we do that though there is some roughness in how it runs off and on. The person I am working with thinks it needs points and a condenser and that this will solve it. Thoughts? I already had the brushes changed in the generator, carb kit is in, and new spark plug. Thanks for any help. Tim |

Re: Update and question regarding 76 Harley restore
points and condensor is 15 bucks at the local blue and yellow auto store. get the good eichilin ones, not the milage maker. replace both at the same time. use a 1970 chevy inline six, you will see they changed the way it attached to the condensor(it screws not plastic clip thingy. either clip the condensor terminal to fit better, or bend it 90 degress, otherwise it will short out when you put the plate back on) 95 is good on compression. as far as the sagging goes...just about every harley ive seen is a sagger.

T Man that is one awesome looking cart. What adapter did you get to put on the aftermarket steering wheel? I would like to do that to mine. The ghost flames are beautiful, sure looks sweet!

On the compression mine is 95 as well with new rings and just a hone job, runs absolutely perfect, will GPS 20 mph. It does smoke a little bit even with the fuel mixture of 1.5 ounces of oil per gallon not sure why it smokes??

Re: Update and question regarding 76 Harley restore
Yes, as stated 95 psi is ideal Set the timing at the factory specs. I own a 1976 and a 1944 ans the 74 came to me like many others have low power and sluggish. So if the ignition is timed perfectly forward and reverse and the carb. is in good setup, I would suspect the clutch and belt. It should run 18 to 20 mph as factory set. That is a very nice job on the cart. My 74 is a 4 wheeler like yours and factory white. The 76 runs fantastic but needs a working over bad. Good luck and please let us know what solves the problem.

Re: Update and question regarding 76 Harley restore
Thanks all for the feedback. Points and condensor going in this weekend. Right now the timing is advanced but we'll put it back to factory once the points and condenser are in. There is a hill on our golf course that is very steep, I want to make sure this baby can make it!
I'm still going to install a stereo (I'll make another post about that to get any tips about wiring it) and I'm putting in a headlight kit as well. Thanks again. T |

Re: Update and question regarding 76 Harley restore
I got the steering wheel and the adapter together from Ebay, if you go to ebay motors and search harley golf carts they will show up. Come in different colors, came to right around $100 with the adapter and went on slick as butter. The center is actually a horn switch which I would like to use but don't know how to run wiring to it because the column isn't hollow.
