New Guy, new Cart, new Problems!
Hi, I recently picked up a what I belive is a 1973 D4. Cart has been sitting in a barn for years. Cart is in decent shape, but hasn't run in a while. This last week I cleaned and sealed the gas tank, added new fuel lines, new carb, new starter and drive belts, new points, condensor, plug, solenoid, coil, spark plug and spark plug wire. New battery and cables, new throttle and choke cables, new fuel and air filters, and have a new voltage regulator on the way.
I am 'trying' to make sure it is mechanically sound before I start doing body work and paint. Questions: How do I set the gap for the new ponits? What is the best way to check the timing? Are there any adjustments or tuning that I need to do to the new carb? Does anyone have a picture of how the throttle cable attaches to the carb? Any other tips would be much appreciated. Thanks guys! |

Re: New Guy, new Cart, new Problems!
So I now have the cart mechanically back together with a new fuel and electrical system. Checked compression today and it’s a 95psi cold. I have good spark and I think it’s timed correctly. When I first turned it over I was able to get it to fire for about 10 seconds and then it died. Seemed very much like it was starved for fuel. I pulled the line from the carb and had fuel at the end of the line.
When I installed the new carb I didn't make any adjustments to it, just bolted it on. Should I have adjusted the carb? I know very little about carbs, especially these smaller ones. Any guesses as to why I am not getting combustion? I am going to add a low psi in-line fuel pump to see if that helps, but regardless that was not something originally included anyways? |

I am not an expert but I know mine gets fuel fine without an auxillary pump. Some on here have commented that the fuel tank vent is sometimes plugged and limits fuel flow, not sure it that will help your situation or not.

I didn't think about that. But I did extensive work on my tank and never noticed a vent? Where would it be? I only see the sender, cap and drain fitting

Re: New Guy, new Cart, new Problems!
On my tank there is a vent on the top of the tank near the front, it just pulls out to check if it is blocked. Yours is a 73 and mine is a 76 so maybe there is a difference, not sure. Below is a picture of a tank, looking down from the top, you can see the red vent in the upper left. This lists as a tank for a 75-81 so maybe yours is different:

Re: New Guy, new Cart, new Problems!
I have a steel tank on the side of the cart where your battery would be. No vents on mine. I have fuel in the filter and when I pulled the line off the carb I had fuel dripping out.
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to adjust the carb? That’s the only thing I can think of. Like I mentioned before, carb is brand new as well as the rest of the fuel system. I have good spark and 93-95psi of compression. I am open to any suggestions. Starting to get pretty ***king frustrated with this thing |

Re: New Guy, new Cart, new Problems!
Your tank vent will not shut down the cart in 10 seconds,
these little carbs can sit on the shelf for years and they have a gunk in them from manufacturing. Try cleaning the carb and set the air screw at 1-1/2 turns out. |

Re: New Guy, new Cart, new Problems!
Thanks, I'm still working on the carb adjustments so I'll give that a shot.
One thing that I noticed today was a drops of fuel/ oil coming out of the exhaust after trying to start it for about 45 seconds of choke and throttle. I don't have the muffler on. Is that something to worry about? Also noticed a little bit on one of the exhaust bolt that I had not fully tightened. |
